Can anybody tell me what beats will be allowing the shrimp/prawn (guests or ghillies) and what beats will be refusing to join in the experiment?

Thanks, but what about the others? You already know of Newtyle and Murthly and if you read the posts Upper Scone is not participating. I would imagine The fourth beat is probably Islamouth. I fished that a few times when the shrimp was legal and it was made clear then that its use on the beat meant summary execution if caught. As far as I am aware(again, very careful choice of words, important person(s) are watching) every other beat has taken its share of the 40 pieces of silver. I dont know either about the tributaries, I think it is restricted to the main stem only.

Kierstream Would you not fish on any of the beats if they were participating in the trial and do you condem them for doing so?

As far as I know the Kinnaird beats aren't fishing it either.

Thanks, but what about the others? what difference does it make?? As it happens, no difference at all. I fancied a bit of shrimp fishing for pure nostalgia, as I've not done it for years. I will not manage though, as I cannot get any fishing done in August through work commitments.

Kierstream Would you not fish on any of the beats if they were participating in the trial and do you condem them for doing so? Cargillon, that is a reasonable question with no barbs attached, so I will answer it in a reasonable manner. Forums are made up of opinions, some right some wrong. The important thing is everyone is entitled to one without running the risk of abuse and without falling out in a spectacular manner. Everything should be carried out with in a manner that addresses the topic, not the individual. In my formative years and well beyond I was a mad shrimper from April on to the end of the season and some toppers were despatched and everything went to either McPhersons, Stanley or my favourite restaurant(not for eating but for selling) At that time we fished for profitand little else. Yes it was nice to get the take and experience the thrill of playing fish, especially some mighty 30lbrs at Pitlochry. At the end of the day however numbers was the name of the game and like everything in life we thought it would never end. But it nearly has and coincidentally I have grown up and I realise that all I was doing was being totally mercenary and caring nothing for the river or the environment. Banning it probably came a bit late but I would shudder to think what state the river would be had it been left in place. The river was little more at times than a shrimpers alley with huge catches reported widely notably in T&S. God forbid we return to those days. In answer to your question I dont condemn anyone for making a decision. I might disagree but choices belong to everyone. You just have to try and make the right one. For the reasons stated I would not fish the participating beats but then I havent fished most of them for years. I voted with my feet on the lower river years ago simply on a cost basis. They became too expensive and before you respond to that I can afford to fish in Alaska and Russia. In my opinion(and only mine) the lower river shot its bolt years ago and possibly that is what should be readdressed, not reintroducing the shrimp. Regards, Tom.

Cargillion,
On 28 July, you posted a messge to confirm some of the details of the experiment. On 3 August, I asked if you could refer me to the documents which would relate to the Scottish Execs decision to grant this exemption, or to expand on the points raised yourself. There's no response from yourself. I cant believe that a significant amendment to law has not been recorded by the Scottish Exec - can you please explain where the relevant docs might be or respond to the points raised yourself?

Well catches during August have certainly improved, it will be interesting to see if a report on the trial is published.

BnC Be interesting to see if the declared catches match those being raved about by some well oiled rods Wonder how many beats will still be worming come wednesday. It's laughable that beats with representatives on the board don't stick to their own recommendations, even if they didn't vote in favour.
