no, not dead fish. just fish that have a lot of udn on them, and loads of gravid fish that need water to get up the spawning burns and out of the main system. /Users/shepley/Desktop/Cardrona 17th 1.jpg[/img] Not UDN fortunately, although I also heard the same comment from a keeper on the Whiteadder. Not furunculosis which I thought might have been the problem initially - I've seen evidence of disease and skittery fish up and down the Tweed, the Whiteadder and North Esk. Most late rivers have reported the same thing - fish not taking. It's certainly the worst outbreak of disease I've seen for a long time and appears to be some kind of dermatitis - with secondary fungal infection. The name given to this fungal growth evdently is Saprolegnia. What surprised me is that in most cases dead fish almost exclusively appeared to be more recent arrivals and silvery. Fortunately, there has been fish spawning on Tweed and tributaries. The heavy rain today and yesterday should have improved chances for next week. Re Cardrona, I fished there last week and saw relatively few diseased fish and some very clean fish showing. We concentrated on the faster water - and I did have a strong pull mid-afternoon, but that was it. Great to revisit my youth and haunts which in those days were association water. The debate about global warming will undoubtedly continue, but I don't think we can blame the politicians for the definite traits in global weather - which are increasing giving us extremes of weather - including long spells of freezing weather as last winter and the amazingly warm October and November. And everything in between. The severe gales are part of that too. We'll say farewell to another season next Wednesday on Tweed and for most of us it will sadly not be too soon. What the fish failed to provide however, was made up by the wonderful autumnal colours. They never fade.

UDN infected fish also get the same or a similar fungal growth, the fungal growth itself is not UDN and does not necessarily mean the fish has UDN
Dead fish is unusual though and hopefully these will be scientifically tested
