any ideas why this is happening november is usually prime time on the upper river but it is like the river has shut herself down Probs cause there is is a lack of Grilse, most of the fresh 6-12 pounders that are caught in October and November are Grilse. Grilse make up the biggest part of the Autumn run, most anglers think that Grilse are small, not so, as some can be in the high teens of pounds.

Agree there we had a lack of grilse too and the back end was very slow. Most rivers are saying much the same thing

Your Autumn run is still down the river and likely wont be at Peebles till the next cold water flood, its still stuffed with fish down here that shouldn't be here at this time of year. A lot of very small fresh fish showing today and I mean small, couldn't get any to pull the fly, it's too warm that's what I reckon anyway there's been plenty water for them to run.

where has the november run gone it canny just no turn up Jamie, I fished Upper Caberston for 3 days this week. I have never seen so many fish in a Scottish river. Every stream , run and pool had fish rolling all over them. I had a sea trout and a sea trout kelt on Monday morning and did'nt get another pull. I knew by Monday lunch time that, apart from the social aspect in the company of Mick Bell I was wasting my time and if the man who shuts down rivers had come in to the hut for a cup of tea at lunch time I would have shook his hand vigorously and helped him put the padlock on. Its that bad. Every pool had fungussed fish lying in them, at one point in the bridge pool I had 3 within a metre of me, all big fish and one was lying against my wader leg. Tuesday was a late start after a long blether with Mick, a long lunch and an early bath without any interest from anything and Wednesday an even later start, an hour in the Bridge , lunch and a saunter up the road. Only 1 fish between 7 anglers for 3 days, a few lost but possibly in the jaiket However, the apres fishing a la mick is something else and more than made up for the disappointing results. ;D But yes----close the river.

There is no doubt in my mind there will be a hard week and a half ahead on the Tweed if there is no rain. Last week's catches just kept plummetting downwards.
Why is the back end run so poor, especially on the Upper Tweed?
Who knows but I did hear on the Radio yesterday that the Sea Birds off Shetland have had a really bad year. No Sandeels and birds have stopped mating.
I often wonder if the smolts starve to death on the way out as opposed to when they are returning.
Seems to me some beats are less affected than others on the rest of the river. Is it the ones with deeper, holding pools that are scoring better than the rest?

a good number of beats show close to average or even a bit above. even some upper beats --ie dawyck show a better than average season . but this is mainly because september was good. it does not take away from the fact that almost all upper beats have had a disaster in november. myself, counts 2 fish black as coal in october 2 pulls in november zero caught, i am meant to be out from tomorrow till the last day but really thinking about teneriffe instead. if i go with that it will be the first time in 30 seasons, i have not fished peebles crown water in the last 2 weeks in november. quite sad really
