imho climate change is now starting to affect our salmon fishing. the autumn run this year on the tweed was far to early. fish where in the upper tweed valley in good numbers by the end of august, when most should still have been in the sea. the very wet summer and very mild autumn has had a very bad effect on the fish. there is no doubt the river is stuffed full of fish, but at peebles as an example 95% are old gravid fish, and a good number are carrying the white fungus on their heads and tails. unless there is a big flood in the next day or two in order to get all the stale fish up the burns, and hopefully bring up the big fresher back enders. we are in big trouble. we also need the water temp to drastically drop. there are still a trout or to rising i to date have had 2 fish this year both dirty both returned. this might be the first xmas that i can remember with no salmon starter on the menu.

IS THAT IT, OR DOES ANYONE HAVE AN OPINION WHY THINGS ARE SO CRAP AT THE MOMMENT. Was talking to Jim Oliver of Jedforest the other day and he was saying much the same. He reckoned he fished though 00s of fish in each pool with fish throwing themselves out the water 3 or 4 at a time without even a nudge. I dont buy into the global warming thing, it is a monstrous scam perpetrated by Al Gore and adopted by government to raise iniquitous carbon taxes. There has always been movements in climate over the ages it has just been unusually warm and wet this year. Only last winter we were complaining of the cold. Quite simply fish have been tempted into rivers throughout Scotland much too early this season. Not a good thing and now we need frosts and/or floods to freshen things up. I am down at Upper Caberston on 14th Nov for 3 days and hope things change before then, if they do a bonanza is in prospect but a chilling of the water is preferable to get spawning moving. Its not good to see fish diseased and distressed and being unable to do anything about it.

Interglacial transition, perfectly normal and to be expected Give it two weeks and there will be the "Global Warmings back and it's going to kill us all" cries, when snow hits.

There are fresh/clean fish lower down the river, but when they are mixed in with the old uns they are reluctant to take to say the least. When fishing through the pools you would think it would be harder not to catch a fish than catch one, had one at 4lbs with lice another two old ones but hear reports of the odd fish with lice in the middle river, one at 18 lbs with long tailed lice today at St Boswells so it wasn't hanging about. Yes a big cold flood would help but don't think that's going to happen soon.

Malcolm, havent fished the Tweed for too many years to admit. What would be the favoured set up in a weeks time given the water isnt going to move much?

Rain on Thursday coming so that might change things. Depends where you are going really as to set up but the thin streams are out fishing the dubs by a distance and with the river levels dropping at the moment a sink tip would do for most. Flies have been everything from two inch tubes to number 8 doubles/trebles, they had one opposite us on a Sunray the other day so take your pick! I'll be on a black/yellow #6 salar double tomorrow tied on a gold hook, bright day bright flee and all that. The old fish are near uncatchable but find a licer and you should get a pull, good luck where ever you are I'll let some through for you.

peebles is full of stale deseased salmon, that will be lucky to find their spawning grounds.................we need a huge flood to empty the river of all the stale fish I may be reading this wrong but are you refering to corpses and kelts?

no, not dead fish. just fish that have a lot of udn on them, and loads of gravid fish that need water to get up the spawning burns and out of the main system. most burns in this area need 2.5 feet on tweed bridge gauge in order that salmon can run up them. at the momment we are nowhere near this so the pools are stuffed with old gravid fish waiting for water. many salmon are now starting to cut redds in the main river and the bit of water from the old railway bridge up to the tail of the runner has loads of fresh cut redds this is not the norm here. the autumn run reached peebles much earlier than usual hence the fish are spawning a few weeks earlier.

Noticed the same myself last week up on Cardrona, the pools are stuffed with old stale fish, worryingly a number of diseased fish as well. None of them interested in what we put under their noses. Did the heavy rainfall on Friday not help bring some fresh fish in and move the old uns on?
