Here is a variation of the Macartairs shrimp I came up with this morning. The Macartairs shrimp is a very successful fly designed and fished on the Thurso. I have substituted some of the original materials like the seals fur dubbing and replaced them with more modern lite brite. Original dressing. Tail: Medium claret bucktal with 3 strands of gold crystal hair Tail hackle. claret hen. Tag: Gold oval tinsel and yellow floss Butt: Orange ostritch Rib: oval gold tinsel Rear Body Golden yellow seals fur front body claret seals fur Wing. claret/ yellow and orange squirrell Throat: Long yellow cock with orange over cheeks Long blue kingfisher with small JC over Head black. My dressing. Hook Bartleet dublin point 4/0 Thread sheer 14/0 white Tail Claret bucktail with gold crystal hair Tag Gold oval tinsel. Butts. Fluo yellow floss, and sunburst glo brite Rear body: blended gold and electric yellow lite brite. front body: blended claret and fuscia lite brite Rib: Gold Oval tinsel. Wing: Claret, Yellow and ornage Bucktail blended with claret crystal hair. Throat hackles. Long yellow cock with shorter orange hen over. Cheeks 6 strands Long kingfisher Blue schlappen with small JC over Head Black utc 70 thread with 2 coats veniards clear cellire and 1 coat hard as nails with nylon. I'm sure Macd will give me his opinion on my changes to a fly he will know well. I reckon that tied on size 12 silver ED trebles or 11 or 13 silver salars these would be absolutely deadly anywhere. fiddely to tie that small mind, but good fun trying ;D Hope you like it. Dave.

Looks good Dave. It would be good if Macd would post a photo of his version so we could spot the differences.

Ah. But Macd didn't tie the original version it was tied by Nigel Griffiths in 2002.
I'm sure Macd will have his own version though.

I know Macd did not tie the original, but i think Macd's " Mairi's Shrimp" might be his version of the fly due to a few similarities, but i could be wrong...

I have a few macartair shrimps and a couple of hairwings tied by nigel- I will post pics when i get a chance.
Mairi's Shrimp was first tied using a piece of claret bucktail I got from Nigel. I love- his hairwing version, never liked the shrimp much. But it has two key features: claret and yellow are important Thurso colours and it has a strong profile. I happily acknowledge that the Marcartair Shrimp was the inspiration for Mairi's.
I have caught 5 fish on Mairi's Shrimp this week: 4 from the Thurso and one from the Dee.

Dave, what you think.. a kingfisher blue goose biot, then jungle cock for the cheeks That was my first idea, but I thought the biots would be too short. I have a good alternative in my antique tying box

Cheers for the reply Ross. I thought the claret and yellow might suit your thurso flees. I know what you mean about the hairwing looking nicer than the shrimp version. I'm sure both catch plenty of fish though

I have a good alternative in my antique tying box I meant for the smaller sizes, salars, ED trebles, etc. Surely the biots would not be too short for them NW.

Very nice indeed ross. The hairwing looks magic with the squirell wing however where on earth does he get claret dyed squirell tails?? I left out the rear hackle on my shrimp version, do you think it misses it?? I reckon it looks a better profile without
