With the Clyde system opening day a few weeks off and the River Tay fishing well in the first week Newtyle was the destination to kick of this years season. After a snowy and early drive up i was greeted with a black coffee and Mr Ritchies craic. The water was a touch high but moving well and there was the chance of a fish.
The morning was spent across the bank and then upstream with the Trap pool being my first cast.
The croy at the tail of the pool is as fishy looking as you will see and easily coverable, that is if its not your first day casting of the new season. Needless to say there were a few set up changes.
From the tail of the Trap the Cotter fishes right down the bank and then into the boil pool.
Lunch was upon us so back to the hut for another coffee and a heat. The fellow angler on the beat were all local to myself and provided good company, one taking a 25lb Rawner whilst harling just above the Trap
After lunch it was back across to the opposite bank and fishing downstream. The first pool is The boil which curves around the bend and heads into the Steps pool. The water has a series of croy's mid river and is easily coverable even woth a rusty cast and a breeze.
I got a pull here just after another angler further down had one, it turned out to be a 12" brown trout trying to take the size six Maggies Shrimp
The pool tail has a colvet running into it then then its the Steps pool and the beat runs continues down to the island at the lower limit.
The Steps pool at this height was perfect for casting off the bank and relatively sheltered from the downstream breeze. By this time the sun had disappeared and was setting, with this brought the kelts up to play with several meandering in the shallows next to the bank but none were caught.
An excellent opening day to my season and in good company on a chilly day. The pools from the Trap down to the Island are excellent to fish and wade in. I haven't explored further upstream but the catch map show several large fish taken from Deansies burn so its one for next month. As ever Martin was on hand with knowledge and advice, and even videoing the one cast wher ei caught the bank all day The day after the beat took a springer from the cotter and 29 kelts.
Good value made even better with Martins offer on just now and into February. Another one to try if you have not already.
