This fish was between 38 - 40 lbs I think that's probably a touch optimistic, and would go with the estimate from Ally Gowans' calculator. I have just looked at some records of big fish, comparing their weight to the estimates on the Sturdy scale, which is based on length. 110cm is more or less 43.25". According to the Sturdy scale, a fish of 43" should be 34.1lb, and a fish of 43.5" should be 35.3lb. From the records I have, the Sturdy predictions are pretty accurate - of 62 fish whose weights and lengths were recorded, the actual weights were, on average, within 2% of the figure predicted by the Sturdy scale. The only trouble is that, although I have the results, I can't remember the Sturdy formula! Can anyone help with this?

Quoting Fred Buller here: "tried and true British Sturdy Formula" four thirds of the length of the fish (1.3333) times the square of its girth divided by 1000, remember it will be calculated in inches. There is also mention of another formula whereby you divide by 800, which I think is the original Sturdy formula based on Norwegian fish. I find it spot on with fresh well conditioned fish, however it can be 10-20% out on coloured fish. I once caught a fish(crocodile) of 39 inches that only just nudged the scales to 20lbs.

CharlieH, I agree with Deerod on this one? Having met Sigurjon Ragnar (Known as Elvis to his friends) on the Kharlovka last year he proceeded to tell me all about the day he caught a 40lber and I have no reason to refute that as he has been fortunate enough to have caught many large salmon on many top Rivers. A top bloke and a real character who would drink neat Vodka shots then after each one beat his chest and kiss each bicep stating very loudly to the camp staff "keep them coming every two minutes" He missed the helicopter on more than one occasion due to being pished but was still the top rod for the week. A professional photographer who has taken pictures all over the world including the likes of Miss world. Life could be worse ;D web.mac.com/srphoto/photo/Welcome.htmlHe told me it took him almost an hour to land and also dragged him over his head on two occasions. For anyone who has fished waters like these that is indeed a scary, scary episode. Elvis's moto is it does'nt matter what fly you fish with on the Kola in Spring.............. as long as it is a Snaelda ;D Once met never forgotten and I hope to meet him again on my travels. 40lb in my book. Keith.
