Spring run over the last few years has been a bit lean, but fish that do get caught are of a high average size. One lucky angler fishing Somerley had two fish over 25lb, the bigger one approaching 30lb. You have to put in the hours, but the rewards can be a fish of a lifetime. I shall be out on Monday. Our season is relatively short (until 31 August) and with weed growth, the fly season is practically over by mid June. Sean

Well - went out today and fished a few of my favourite pools. It was good to be out again and waving the 16 footer about. No fish, but it's early days..... Sean

This is an encouraging start - first fish from the river last year wasn't until 21st March! As Greenbanks mentioned, the Avon was famous for its early springers in the past. A lot of fish used to be taken in early season - the river record is 49.5 lb. Biggest fish in recent times was estimated at around 34lb - I believe this was caught by a guest of a rod, who had never salmon fished before! Every season fish are caught approaching 30lb - they are few and far between, but well worth the effort.

About time I gave an update! Fish have been coming out over the last 2 or 3 weeks topped by a magnificent fish of 32lb+ (see www.avondiary.net for photo). Forr those of you that know the Dorset Frome, a friend had the first fish off the river today. It measured 50 inches It was taken on a black francis fly and an eight weight grilse doublehander - that is some fish!! Photos are on the way.... Sean
