I havent been an early spring angler on middle/lower beats for many years now so my day on Newtyle yesterday was a big break from habit. What I did notice very quickly was the almost total absence of kelt corpses from the banks or lying in the slacker parts of the river. This used to be an integral part of the cycle of life and the accrid smell in the nostrils (and the dogs having a good roll ) was an offensive but nevertheless welcome indication that the cycle and the river was in good health. Martin did reckon that there had been a few in December and maybe so, but what are the feelings of others on the forum and particularly our professional brothers who are on the rivers dailly? Are more kelts surviving the rigours of spawning or are there simply just not enough nowadays and the numbers we see simply reflecting the catastrophic (perhaps) decline in numbers running the rivers? What is the take on the Dee and Esks for example where rod catches appear healthy and would indicate healthier overall run patterns than our Central Area rivers?

A topic that I had asked on a few occasions. Like you I used to see corpse all over the place, hanging from trees, and marooned on Islands etc.
What is the answer - I don't know? So like you I would love to hear others views on this.

KF, I do accept that other factors such as the generally much milder , wetter, spate inducing weather nowadays may cause a quicker and more efficient downstream migration. There has got to be more to it than that.

Grayling fishing up to the middle of January i used to see a lot of kelts in the river both dead and alive and yet come Febuary there appeared to be very few. I put this down to the fish entering the river late, spawing and getting back to the sea a.s.p. The smell of rotting kelts used to be all over the river but now you have to look for them. When i was younger i used to fish the Tweed at Stobo in April for the trouts and the river was littered with white dead kelts . Istill get the odd kelt up to May some years

You can not see dead what was not there in the first place!! I appreciate that Tony, that is why I have asked for input from other rivers to the north and south that seem to be holding up slightly better. Mind you, you would need bloody good eyes and smell to notice any kelts on the hill. ;D ;D ;D

I was on Murthly on opening day and counted quite a few corpses (some quite big) on the lower beat. There was no shortgage of living ones being caught also. Did not see any of the real mccoy though. :-(
