At this time of year I wonder how much damage is done to our rivers and streams from road salt / grit? It has always concerned me that during low water levels due to frost the more salt is put on our roads. Lower the temperature goes more and more water is trapped by the ice and snow, the roads departments then put on extra salt to ensure that the roads are safe for traffic. This highly saline substance then runs into our river systems during the spawning time. Does it have any impact on the eggs and or fry / parr in the rivers.

I wouldn't think too much if any damage. I base my unscientific reply on the fact that a lot of salt will trickle feed into the sytem and the vloumes of most rivers will be able to cope with that no problem.
I had a few aquariums a few years ago and we used to put salt into the tank to, amongst other things reduce the risk of fungal disease.
