Hi there folks, I know this has been covered on "other" sites before, but with the rapid development of equipment and flees over the past couple of seasons, i thought it would be worth asking the question: Spring Tactics. On what river, with what rod, line reel and leader you would apply, and with what pattern of flee??? Here's mine: Looking at the Helmsdale for opening day, and then the Dee for a good part of spring. Rods for next season will be 14ft and 15ft Vision GT4 Catapults. Reels are the Lamson ULA and LiteSpeed models. Lines will be my new found RIO Flight Skagit 600grain which works a dream on both the 14ft and 15ft rods. When the water warms up onto the Vision ACE Inter/S2 shooting head, then the RIO Hover/S1 head. Flees for spring shall be Helmsdale tied RS Special Willie Gunns in 1" Tungsten, and 1" Copper. Black and Yellow RS Temple Dogs in both Tungsten and Copper (once i ask Ron to tie them for me!!!). Best regards to all for Xmas and New Year. FishNapper. Darren.

I think you could count on one your fingers the number of fish that come off the Tay on fly prior to March.
I would o for a copper Toby fished like a fly!
However if the fly is your choice...go for it.

my choice of tackle
my 16ft #10/11 Rod
Lines - Fast sinking and intermediate Shooting Heads with a RIO AFS Floating Shooting Head Kit (just in case)
Short Leader - 6ft max (most likely 23.5lb Seaguar)
Flies - 1.25" Copper, Aluminum and Templedog Tubes plus a wee selection of larger Doubles and the odd large Single Hook
Tactics - avoid freezing and work way down runs covering as much water/lies as possible in time available. Pray like crazy that any hut has a fire for Lunchtime.
Fish a short Line to start and try to avoid casting so far that it all ends up in a heap or does not fish straightaway
Pay close attention to the draw at the dangle before re-casting
Stick with one fly for the morning/afternoon unless very good reason to change it
Be especially alert from about 1030 onwards to Lunchtime
Remember to use a Whitewing Fly during last hour or so (Never usually last that long!!)
Return any fish caught unless it is second of day etc (32 years now since last landed a Spring fish) if permitted
Give a prayer of thanks that I am fortunate to be able to do what I am doing
Don't faff around with experiments etc and stick to covering the water.
