Been asked to make a few flies for a friend at work and tied two versions of a golden willie gunn and wondered in general what would people prefer to fish with? or interested to hear people's thoughts. Cheers Matt

Like the top one as it matchs the traditional colours better. kf

Top one. The bottom one is something else, not a GWG.

Top one. The bottom one is something else, not a GWG. BnC Its dressed in exactly the same way, golden body, yellow, red and black wing. The difficutly of the fur is that its harder to mix the different colours.

Gold willie gunn should be mixed yellow orange wing with black over I like them both but would rather fish the top one, it would look nice with a black hackle too, I looks better with the cone in place over a hackle Will still catch fish though

i dont think there is a right or wrong, just personal preference. neither my cup of tea i would have a trad gold willie gunn on a slipstream tube my alternative would be a built wing like the willie gunn conehead shown elsewhere on here. thanks for sharing- its what makes flytying

However yes I agree with the bit about the hackle the cone didn't fit so well with the bulk thats built up with the bucktail. i dont think there is a right or wrong, just personal preference. neither my cup of tea i would have a trad gold willie gunn on a slipstream tube my alternative would be a built wing like the willie gunn conehead shown elsewhere on here. thanks for sharing- its what makes flytying I think I'll be using slipstream tubes from now on for these types of tubes. The eumer brass tubes and coneheads are nice and heavy and will definately get them down in cold water. I've got two days lined up on the Dee for the second week of the season.

Matt - the top fly looks fine and will fish well enough. The second fly will not swim very well due to the softness of the materials - use those materials where you "build" a wing where other layers will support one another. I've been there - the second fly will "clump" and disappoint you when it's swimming. However, the real poitive here is your ability to apply proportions. Getting the proportions right on a fly is the most difficult aspect of fly-tying and you've got it right with these two. You also have a fine blend of colours in the top one - very subtle. I note you're fishing the Dee in Feb - don't go without a black/yellow brass tube as it's a must for spring on the Dee as others will no doubt note. Apologies if any of the above offends you but I'm not a "gr8 fly m8" protagonist

It was just an experiment the second option. I'll probably do a few templedog style ones as well. I've got a couple of 2inch black and yello tubes for the occasion specially. cheers matt

Do you mean 2" tubes or 2" total length? For the Dee, at normal height, I tend to start with a 1 1/4" tube. Would only use 2"+ in high water.
