Again , i raise the question can anyone please explain ,or give an opinion on why Cardronna on the upper Tweed has managed 8 Salmon and 1 Sea trout to date. yet other beats likeTraquair , Horseburgh, Lower Caberston, Upper Caberston Hollylee ,etc have either blanked or have had the odd fish. i find this really quite strange. I have been home in Peebles quite a lot lately, and have walked the river with the dogs and never seen a hint of a salmon. Can anyone think why only one upper beat is catching fish ??

was in tackle shop in peebles today, and they say on ave about 15 trout day tickets per week from them are issued. plus season tickets, plus other outlets. would it not be fair to ask why some of these rods are not getting the fright of their lifes??

Probably getting more rods earlier than usual, as i notice the prices appear to have gone up considerably from last year for later in the season (may be my imagination though)

As a new contributor to this forum this post was drawn to my attention as a co-owner of the Cardrona Beat and can I perhaps comment. There are several reasons why Cardrona might stand out on the beat returns recently ;
1. Some of the upper beats understandably do not declare their returns until they start up their full week lets in October. For example Traquair I know have had two salmon at least to date, well done. No beat is obliged to declare their catches until the full end of season formal return is submitted.
2. Some of the co-owners at Cardrona are amongst the most experienced fishing the river (I exclude myself from that description as it implies old, grey haired or wrinkly). As has been the case the last couple of years if experienced rods wet their line in August and September the fish will show up on the catch returns.
3. All who check the full river reports will note that the Tweed has been achieving record catches of salmon last year and continuing with the current season, it is obvious that a tremendous run of fish has been running the river given the raised water levels recently.
4. Since 2007 our guests have shown us that it is well worth fishing right from the first summer spate . I would note that in 2008 the September catch return was the best month in the season, outpacing October and November quite easily by around 40 fish to around 30 for the two later months.
I hope this explains to some extent. Still it would be nice to be fishing The Lees tomorrow !

I can tell you The Lees was bloody hard work today with a near gale right down the river and very very beery water no chance of a fly, but we did manage 7 this afternoon and 2 seatrout all on spinner, should be a very good day tomorrow if it settles down a bit, might even get the fly rods out I hope.

Certainly was beery Malcolm, stopped off at junction for half an hour today saw a few splashes and some half hearted spinning. Expectations must be very high for next few days!!

Well it was all action first thing then everything stopped about 11.00am they just went off when you would think things should of been improving, mostly on a x rap this morning due to height and colour but by this evening river was cleaner and they came back on. Should be good tomorrow and we will all be back on the flee, just knocked up a few Temple shrimps on 1.25 tubes and some#6 cascades on gold trebles for tomorrow. Not that I'm complaining about 16 fish today mind you we just seemed to peak too early. If they are on the pull tomorrow I would like to see over 20 but rain in west tonight so that could spoil party, you just have to get at them when they are there. Started to see a few more Grilse today as they have been missing from the catches, recently a wee fish has been 8ibs. Again no complaints. Its a long Spring !!!
