:)can any one give advice on the best flies to start tying , to learn the trade on may be 1 shrimp , 1 tube , 1 cone head for those of us starting off please Start with something simple like a stoats tail. then move onto cascades. maybe a simple black and yellow tube or black with silver body. sunray shadow's are a nice simple starter for tubes too as far as coneheads, the baxters babe is a simple one to start off with

Yep...sunrays would definitely be a good starter as you're really only tying in 2 materials. Then you could possibly progress on to a monkey that has a hackle also. After that you could consider tying something with a tinsel body, a hackle and a wing. After that the sky's the limit...good luck. PS. Dont for afraid to post your tyings as it would be a good way of getting any issues that you have resolved Good post and point regarding sticking them on here for the experienced guys to advice further if need be

Can I suggest getting on Youtube and watching the davie mcphail videos they are great, he gives lots of tips on how to tie nicely as well as the techniques involved. Start simple and work your way up. Its pretty easy to get more complex once you get the hang of things. Can I also recommend not varnishing flies straight away. If you decide it doesn't look anyhting like it should, you can cut off the silk and start again saving the most expensive part which is the hook!
cheers

I second watching Davie MacPhails you tube video series, they are excellent and you should find a good progression. The jewel I found was watching the purple cascade and seeing how to tie in the front hackles and sweep them back giving a small head, previously I had been tying then the antiquated way i was shown many years ago. After viewing I stripped 50 flies and started again
