I went for a cast or 2 on my local Ayrshire river this evening..
In the teeth of a gail with the rain battering down, I wasn't really that optomistic.
The water level was perfect and I fished down through all my usual spots. I had been fishing for an hour or so and was getting ready to pack up and leave, but thankfully common sense told me to go and have a cast in one of the larger pools downstream.
The run at the head of the pool is extremely fast flowing, So armed with my 12fter with a floater and 10inch sinktip with a size 9 gold salar calvin on the point with a size 12 ally's on the dropper I made a short square cast to lengthen my line a little and half way round the fast run, I saw a fish crash at the surface, and then all hell broke loose. My rod arched double as the fish screamed off down the run into the pool, and then continued running for the tail of the pool. Staight into the backing on my reel, it cartwheeled around the tail of the pool before going deep in the pool that is around 12-13ft deep. It slowly came back up the pool towards me, and I used the force of the current at the head of the pool to try and tire the fish out a bit.
20 minutes of rod bending action later and this beauty was safely in the net.
11lbs of sea liced ayrshire sping salmon. taken on a size 9 gold salar calvin's shrimp.
My first ever spring salmon, and I am overjoyed that it came from my own wee local river that I hold so dear.
So to all those ayrshire anglers who won't get the rods out ubtil October... get out there, and put the time in... you could be lucky too
Still Grinning from ear to ear.
