After fishing the Helmsdale I turned my attention to the Thurso, a river which I hold deep to my heart after it gave me my 1st fish in Sept.
Wed Day 1 I gave my ghillie the day of so she could ahve a long lie!! But a late breakfast was ordered of scrambled egg, local black pudding with toast for 12pm!!
I arrived at 6.15am the forcast was scattered showers and a bitch of a wind!! But hey ho I wont catch nowt sitting in the Pub!! I decided to fish 2 pools hard Curives and the Salmon pool..
Cruives pool best way to fish this is to back it up.
The neck of the salmon Pool, this can be fished down and across or square.
The Salmon pool just down from the neck. This again is best backed up but there is a little flow which with the aid of some hand linging can give the flies a better movement. The only fish I saw was bang in the middle of the croys on the far bank. (i'll get to it later)
The whole Salmon pool.
Scattered showers!!! More like scattered monsoons!!!! lol
I fished hard for 51/2 hours seeing as I mentioned before only 1 fish. I chucked everything bar the kitchen sink at the fish but to no avail. A local chap who had braved the long hike in from the other side appeared so I decided to sit down watch and have a smoke and to give him the run of the pool as I had it all to myself all morning. He started below the 2nd croy fishing very carefully backing up all the way, and as he got to the middleof the croys I told him there was a fish lying there, 2 minutes later fish on!!!!!!! Yip it defo looked like the fish same size etc and exactly from where I had been seeing it.. What am i doing wrong??? Any way time to head abck for a bite to eat.
Friday day 2 after a long chat with eddie the Thurso's main man I decided to give it another go, and bought a PM permit for today.
Ghillie at my side we arrived at 2pm. I gave the Salmon pool a quick run through, nothing.. So I decided to go and look for other pools and fish them instead today.
1st was the Bleachfield pool. It wasnt long before I was sharing it with the otter!! Time to move on..
Looking up Henry's pool towards the Grilse pool. I cherry picked my way both up and down this stretch as it is mostly shallow water but has a few good holding spots.
Upper Commissary is above the Weir. There is some good lies at the tail towards the far bank.
Lower Commissary again the far bank is a good lie.
We left the river at 7pm to go for dinner and a glass of wine. During this session I met a local chap who pointed me in the direction of likely lies and areas where he regulary takes fish, many thanks for his help.
