Hi guys,
As a novice salmon fly fisherman I am now pretty much kitted out except for the flies. I am preparing to put in an order and have come up with the following patterns through chatting to more experienced anglers and trawling the forum.
Basically I'm after 8 - 10 good patterns in different sizes that will cover most situations until I gain more experience and develop my own ideas. So far I have:
1. Cascade 2. Gold Bodied Willie Gunn 3. Park Shrimp 4. Black Stoats Tail 5. Silver Stoats Tail 6. Executioner 7. Flamethrower - Yellow 8. Flamethrower - Orange 9. Sunray Shadow (tied on hook or tube???)
I'd be interested to hear what people think of this list, what sizes I should get and if there are any particular patterns that I should add or omit.
Also I would appreciate some guidance on what tube flies I should be using in heavy water. I.e the above patterns tied on tubes or any other additions.
Cheers Sean

Cheers SS, what sizes would you recommend? Would 9, 11 and 13 cover most eventualities?

For standard hooks size 8 and 10 are a must so for salars it would probably be 9 and 11
You will have to expand on that eventually for high and very low water but it will get you going in most situations. Using these sizes with a variety of sink tips will help.
A few tubes are good for higher water any pattern above especially the sunray and park shrimp

My local river is the Leven on the Lomond system but I dont enjoy fishing it so the Endrick which is small with trips to bigger rivers like the Tay, Tweed etc plus the Clyde which is also fairly local.
What kind of tubes do you recommend? Copper or tungsten?
I have a couple of sunrays on plastic tubes so heavier ones will be needed. Is this pattern always tied on a tube?
Cheers for the help guys.

Some tubes on copper and aluminium will see you covered.

One last question.
Should I get them tied on doubles, trebles or both?
Two last questions?
Salars, Esmond Drury or any other type of hook?
Thanks again

The Leven has been a difficult water to get fish from for the past few seasons for one reason or another. It is a great river for casting practice though, I have had good success on orange bottle tubes and a golden frances. On the Endrick give it a go when there has been water any time from the end of may onwards. Use orange flies and black & red flies as the season progresses. 1. Orange bottle tube 15 - 22mm overal length 35 - 50mm 2. Allies shrimp size 16 up to a 6. 3. Black and red executioner type fly size 16 up to a size 6. 4. Golden frances tube overall length up to 50mm. 5. Red frances tube length up to 50mm. 6. Orange shrimp type flies from 16 up to size 6. Hope this helps K MacC
