Here is the tying I use for the Hot Butt Cascade with which I like to fish on many occasions during the season
It would be the first fly I would try if I was on an unfamiliar water or if the water was running a bit above normal/coloured or just plain unsure what to try.
I recently tied a batch for Fly Swap on another Forum
Body - Copper Tube 1.25”
Underbody - White Plastic Sticky Tape (about 0.75” wide)
Tying Thread - GloBrite White
Butt - Hot Orange Antron Wool
Tail - Orange and Yellow Bucktail mix (with 2 strands of
Crystal Pearl on top) about twice the length of
the Tube (total fly length is 3.25/3.5”
Body - UTC Mirage (varnish first Layer then wind on top layer)
Rib - Red Copper Wire (0.3mm)
Wing - Black Squirrel (to about halfway down tail with 2
Strands of Pearl Crystal Flash on top
Hackle 1 - Soft Yellow Cock (I used Whiting’s American Saddle)
Hackle 2 - Soft Orange Cock
Head - Tying Thread with 3 coats of varnish
(see tying note below)
1st coat - Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails or similar
2nd Coat - Veniard's Black Varnish
3rd Coat - Sally Hansen's or similar
(NB next time I tie this fly, I will swap over to a Black Thread to finish the head – it is a lot easier when varnishing as you only need 3 coats of Sally Hansen’s)
The finished Batch
A close up of the Fly
Here you can see the idea behind putting a layer of white plastic on the tube before commencing tying the fly.
This fly literally "glows" in the water
Hope you like it and, if you care to tie it and try it, you never know what will happen.
