For anyone interester, fishing on the river moriston can be had through Annie Girvan, the estate fator on Invermoriston estate, on 01320 351300. The Moriston only fishes four rods, but must be one of the most productive spring fisheries in the country. Fish are taken from opening day (15Jan) through until the end of May when it closes. Here is a sample of A february springer taken by Grant Mackenzie this year.

Heard a few things about this river over the years but never thought to get round to trying it . kf

In the not so distant past the Moriston has had a bad reputation for killing fish. However, last year the estate was bought by a new owner who is implementing 100% C&R as of 2010.
The upper river will also be opened up to allow fishing on the Moriston proper, as it has always been fished in the estuary, where the hydro outflow is.
The estuary is fly or spinning. However, I stick to the fly and have had some of my best sport their.
With regards to catches they are kept fairly quiet, however I know a good year would be around 200 with a poor year around 100 fish, which is not bad considering it is only fished from Jan-End of May, with 4 rods.
Ross, aye Grants fish was a cracker; I think he said it weighed the MacLean net at 22lb.

Not too sure if bookings are being taken at the mo, but if you give Annie a ring she will keep you right.

Cheers for contact Info nessc, any idea how levels and flow will be affected on the Moriston with Glendoe being down?
I know the Glass/Upper Beauly was running high for the majority of last season after the problems at Glendoe. I take it the Moriston fishes better when there is more water coming down?

Strathglass
I don't think the glendoe shutdown should have an impact on any rivers, other than the River Ness, as it is run independently and not connected to any other hydro schemes via tunnels.
With regards to water levels; I like to arrive at the Moriston with the generation on full blast, then dropping back to half power. It is at this point you have the best chance. Although as long as they don't stop generating all together you are in with a good chance.

Thanks for further info on ideal water heights.
I think the main reason for increased levels on the Glass was that they were compensating for the loss of Glendoe by running the neighbouring scheme, although this was really just hearsay. Trying to get reliable info from SSE/Hydro board can be a wee bit hit or miss!

The Moriston has its opening day tomorrow; it will also be the big unveiling of the new fishing hut and the lodge. On the fishing front, I have been told that there is plenty of water to draw the fish in from the loch, but with the water from the river being colder than that of the loch, they may stay put. However there is always a chance. It was only a few years ago that myself and a fellow fisher had a fish each on the opening day so fingers crossed!! Opening day fish back in 2006
