I watched again Hakan Norling tying his original templedog on the ASR DVD ( only after I had got it working by restoring it with the JML disc cleaner kit). I note that although he tied the wing in facing forward first, he then split it and bound it down with the thread in a low profile. He also said in the DVD that the reason for splitting the hair bunches before tying down was to increase volume without adding bulk. This fly is quite subdued compared to some of my recent ones . Does anybody use this fly or similar. supposed to be good for conditions where there is a lot of humus in the water (peat stain I presume?) Dressing Tube of choice ~ in this case 1.75" 1/8" copper Tag ~ oval gold Tail & butt ~ Multi yarn fluo orange Rear body ~ gold tinsel Front body ~ black peacock dubbing Body hackle ~ orange badger Rib ~ oval gold Wing ~ Fiery brown AF in two layers, tied forward then split and swept back in bunches. Gold angel hair and flash of choice between Front hackle ~ soft black cock Wing ~ black AF, peacock flash over Cheeks ~ JC

Yeh I watched the video last week. You should copy the dvd before you lose it totally sounds like it's on the way out.
It seems a good idea to split the wing 2 or 3 times to create translucence and more movement when water flows through the wing. This technique could be transferred to standard hairwings and hairwing tails. I remember years ago I used to tie a shrimp fly with hair for the tail. I tied the tail under the shank and on top of the shank with flash on top of each bunch, therebye splitting the tail in two. It caught me many fish over the years, perhaps this is why?

Thats an excellent looking templedog builnacraig, really nice profile to the wing. Watched Hakan's tying on that DVD too and picked up some interesting tips regarding the tying in of the wing. Very interesting to see how different people go about tying the same style of fly.
