Not really a thread for the novice but more for the seasoned angler who can justify spending top dollar on his gear. Nothing against someone starting out its just when I did I know I wouldn’t have spent a lot more than the basics until I was sure I would use it.
Imagine your binning your old waders, coats, rods, reels, fly boxes etc.. And starting from scratch, ie you have nothing at all, but with a bit of money to spend.
No I didn’t win the pools either..

I'll need to think about this, but i'm fairly sure my trout rod would be 9' 5wt and be made of bamboo.

Rod
Well i've the mind set on the B&W Normay 14ft, I havent heard a bad word about them and very few breakages.. exactly what i want lol
Probably 4 pc, just because it will travel better...
I did have a play around with a friends Hardy Swift during the summer and liked it so i could be persuaded.. Ah hell get both ;D
and the Guideline LPxe 11ft 8/9 as its the perfect length and rating for what i want from a single hander for grilse.
lines
The JM Multi tip.. just to try ;D
I have a Rio Mid Spey multi tip and like it, so keep it in reserve. and for the single hander i'll stick to Cortland 444.. never let me down great lines at a good price as well.
Reels
hard one not too sure... I like the old style click and pawls alot and the Hardy Cascapedia does look the dogs danglies... although a bit of bling could catch the eye.. any ideas ?
as for the wet gear...
it all seems to leak and pack in at some stage so dont think id spend too big on this. Open to suggestions

Imagine your binning your old waders, coats, rods, reels, fly boxes etc.. What a horrible thing to suggest! Waders, the more you spend on these the worse they seem to get? Give the Greys GRXi waders a try, very sturdy and nice to wear. Only thing I'd change on them is the pocket in the front, I wouldn't mind that being water proof. They don't leak though so I'm not complaining! Got mine from Ian Woods this spring, he advised them over more expensive one's and so far I've been very happy with them. I really like Hardy but would get the Loop Classic in stead of the Cascapedia if you need a heavy(ish) reel, not a true click and pawl but still very nice. On a lighter rod I'd go with a Bougle MK V. And of course there's always the option of a nice vintage LHW Salmon Perfect ...

A mate of mine had a pair of orvis waders ,used them a couple of seasons when they started leaking so he emailed Orvis telling them about it leak, they emailed him back telling him to remove the label on the inside of the chest pocket and send it to them as all the information they need was on it. Within a fey days he received a brand new pair they even rein burst him for the postage not too bad after sales service I think.I have an Orvis lightweight jacket ,had it for at least 10 years and its still going strong.

Hey FP, nice to have you on board here. I am sure you will have much to contribute.
In 2008, I made an estimate of replacement value of what was in the back of the car when I went fishing which included tackle for my son to fish - it was around £3500 if bought at RRP!! So.....
If I had some dosh and needed to star again, here's my chosen items for the fishing I tend to do or aspire to:
16ft Rod rated 10/11 3 piece for choice
14ft Rod rated 9/10 ditto
(Was at the Dunkeld Meet and tried Scott Mackenzie's DTX rods - the 14 and 15 footers. The are very, very good rods and I would have to say I am tempted heavily by them)
11 or 12ft Rated 7/8 ditto as long as there is a bit of a Butt
Reels to suit each such as Snowbee XS or Prestige plus Spools as required
Lines for the 16ft Rod
Fast sinking Shooting Head to suit the lift Michael Evans or Hardy Mach 11 - Floaters and Intermediates
Lines for the 14ft Rod
Michael Evans or Hardy Mach II's as above Medium Sinking Spey Line 55ft A DT9 Floater
11/12ft Rod
A short Mid-Spey Floating line like the Snowbee 1D A DT 8 or 9 Floater
A range of 5, 10 and 15ft Tips
A comprehensive range of Leader Material which is less than the breaking strain of my 1500 yards of 50lb gel spun backing.
Perhaps 50 yard spools of Maxima Ultra Green from 40lbs down to 10lbs.
Seaguar 23.5 and 18lb for Tubes
Another other pure Fluorcarbon leader in 15, 12 10 and 8lb - I quite like Rio's Fluoroflex and never had a bother with it in 8 and 12.5lb for stillwater trout fishing etc. Always really easy to fish a longer leader with droppers with it.
Priest, C&R release tool, Wading Stick, 2 Landing Nets , probably a Whitlock 24" Folding and a 20" Gye Net for summer Grilse etc
Waders - if restricted to one pair, it would have to be Ocean waders. Had mine since 1986 with no problems. Great all rounders apart from really hot weather and I don't tend to fish in such temperatures. Otherwise Simms Wading Boots with Aquastealth Sole plus Breathables with a zip.
Automatic Life Preserver Hat/Cap Packable Wading Jacket Hardy EWS Wading Jacket A wee body bag for Flies and leader material C&F Fly Boxes for my Wading Jacket - Tube and Foam Lined Nippers Diamond hook Sharpener Whistle Fishing Pliers/Tool
Flies to suit conditions
I could go on and on but have just woken and smelt the coffee!!
