Started tying some Red Frances and will be moving on to Black and possibly Green as well.
I have been stripping large Furnace and White hackle stalks - as per Davie McPhails video on YouTube which is brilliant viewing.
How important are the White Hackle stalks in the dressing as I am struggling to find enough ones to match the Furnace ones I use. In other words, is the Catchability factor affected if you do not always incorporate the White stalks at each side.
Would also like to know what is the earliest date anyone has caught a fish on a Frances fly in Scotland?

2 white stems are important on the francis, it gives a far better presence in the water than if tied with only the natural or dyed furnace hackles. Earliest fish I know of was late february taken on a black francis 15mm bottle tube. it also accounted fro 18 in 1 week in may 2009

weefrankie
many thanks for the info.
Did not realise how important the white stalks were felt to be to the success of the fly.
Will also try some Natural Boar Bristle on the wee sizes but have a go at bleaching it white first. Don't think Domestos is the answer so need to ask a proper hairdresser!

She has some lovely bristles in stok that are a wee bit finer than the standard bristles she sells, they have an almost clear stem and take a dye far better than the standard ones with the black stem

Dave, Do you use boar bristles for some of your Frances? Which way round do you tie them in? NW. NW I only use hackle stems for mine, as I find the boar bristles too short. Even my small francis on micro tubes etc, have long feelers. The boar bristles, don't give the fly the presence in the water that I like from the hackle stems. I have also experimented with using dyed hackles ie orange/black on the same coloured fly, as when you strip the stems you get the white edge from where the hackle fibres were routed, and the colour on the rest of the stem. I would use these in place of the 2 white stalks. As for which way to tie in the bristles or stems, tie in one on the top, with the stem curling upwards, turn your tube round so this is on the bottom, and tie another one on top. then repeat the process so you have 4 bristles spaces out, evenly as if quartering the tube. Then add your 2 white stems, to give 6 in total.evenly spaced around the tube hope this helps. Dave.
