The Helmsdale river will open as usual on January 11th but in ordinary mode - day tickets & Association water ticket holders only. The fun begins on the rest of the river with the official ceremony and traditional first cast on Thursday 13th at 9.30am in front of the Bridge Hotel. 3 days of free fishing up to the Kildonan falls will follow.
Scott Mackenzie will be on parade with me and a few other angling club members at the Kilphedir pool on beat 2 from around 10am. He will have all his latest gear on show and we will both be doing demos and offering free casting instruction. The location is around 2 miles up the glen and in the next pool on your left past the crash barriers and water gauge in Salscraggie pool. Drams will be on the go from the hut!
The Bridge Hotel is doing special 3 day packages for anglers and accom should be booked as soon as possible - you can call them on 01431821100. The Tackle Shop will also be in January sale mode!
Hopefully the weather will be favourable this time round and a springer or two will be had!! 6 sea-liced fish were caught in January 2006 and 2 on the opening days....it can happen up here if the river is fishable! So it's a great chance to fish some cracking spring water for free...
Hopefully see you there.
