Use white thread for everything, blends in better with materials and doesn't stand out so badly if there is a gap in the tying.
Coloured varnish for the head

l only use white thread when needed ,much prefer to use my fire orange,red and black when tying saving the varnish

A very good tip , especially when tying floss bodies. A double layer of white thread under the floss really makes the colours shine.
Same for heads.

I agree 100%
I use white thread for 90% of my flies now, especially when using a dubbed or floss body..
It allows the colours you are adding to stand out and not be dulled down.
Then simlpy change to whatever thread you wish for your head, and always varnish with clear varnish to prevent coloured varnish leaching into your hackles/wing.
