For fly tying I may add!!
How many of you guys use the tool and does anyone just use their fingers. (doesn't quite sound right that does it)
I think the main issue I have with trying this flee tying lark is the dreaded whipping tool and over the years when I was tying trout flees, just made do with a couple of half hitch knots.
So are you a fingers or a tool guy?

Fingers only, never had a whip finish tool in all the years I have tied. I have tried a few belonging to other people and found it easier to use the old fingers.

waste of money. a few half hitches finishes the fly.

Never used one and can't see the benefit of one.

couple of granny knots and a bucket load of super glue Thats more or less what I do now Duncan, just wanted my heads a bit neater without the hitch knots showing up and as has happened a few times - unravelling on me ;D

KF,
I prefer using a Whip Finish Tool these days because of the pressure I can place on the thread. And its easier for me to direct the finish towards the Wing of the fly - which is where I want to cut my thread off.
Have used two types - the Thomsons Spring type and the Matarelli type. Much prefer the latter. It's a doddle with it

Kenny, there is a very easy way of doing a whip finnish knot without a tool, it is the same knot as you get with the tool, and is easy to learn www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-WqowBsrBYThis is the one I use. the only difference is I whip towards the eye, not away.

I just posted the same one.
Thats how I do it too, but whip towards the eye, for a neater finish.

Use both for whip finish. I prefer using the digits for smaller flies as I can direct the thread better - at least think I can.

I prefer to use the tool although I do it by hand from time to time as well. I think it's key that you find the right whipping tool. Is it just me or do a lot of the tools on the market just don't work very well? I modified an old one by bending it around so that it works well for me.

I agree Christian that a lot of the tools you buy are too stiff when it comes to casting off the thread at the end of the knot. I just find it so much quicker and easier with my hand, and if you keep enough tension on the thread, you get a nice neat knot every time.

Fingers for almost all but the frank matrelli is the best of the tools i use when using danville spiderweb 16/0 or 18 /0 thread,to many cuts and rough bits in fingers for this thread to survive
