After seeing a recent post on the availablility of tying and tube hooks, I was quite surprised and disgusted to see the prices of salar and loop doubles for both tying and for tubes.
Salar hooks seem to be averaging 7.50 a pack with loop tubes reaching as much as 9.99.
My question is how on earth can partridge and loop justify the huge price hikes they have levied on their hooks.??
The price of 10 salars has almost doubles in the past 18 months, which in my opinion is a disgrace. Fair enough, the hooks very popular with fly tyers due to the nice profile they give to a fly, however, are they really worth that much?? I personally don't think so.
I have stopped buying salars now, and I'm sure other will be doing the same, I will use up my stocks of them , and then that is it. time for a cheaper alternative.
when you add the price of the hook, to materials and then time taken to tie a fly, it's little wonder some flies cost the same as a small rapala.
Surely there is a tackle company out there who can see the huge potential in creating a hook, with the same profile as a salar, (without inward facing points) who could sell it for a fraction of the price. They would make a fortune.
Anyway. rant over.
Opinions would be appreciated.
Dave.

I don't usually tie for anyone apart from myself , or use that many hooks in a season , so cost really isn't that big an issue for me. What gets on my goat , with Salars especially , is the variations in point shape even within one packet. Used to be that it was easy to pick out a packet with the relatively straight points , but nowadays there's a million and one variations within a packet of ten. Phucking annoying !!
