I recently purchased a Hardy Uniqua Series 2 reel and have been using it for three months thus far This week i found the reel began to lock up partially and now completely whilst stripping line. Roughly 20 revolutions in then the reel would slow and then ultimately jam with some not so gentle persuasion required to free it off. I took it to bits this evening suspecting the Drag assembly had environmental contamination and merely required cleaning. With the drag dis assembled there was no interference in the assembly and the two friction discs were clean and showing little signs of wear. The only other component that could cause the jamming is the rotating toothed collar which the needle roller bearings in the spool locate onto. The collar is located onto the central spindle and rotates using a hydrodynamic bearing, in this case a high melting point grease. The jamming, it turns out, is due to binding and stiction in the collar to spindle interface. The oem spec lubrication is a lithium grease and has been washed from the void during use and with the high speeds during stripping line the remaining lubrication cannot maintain coverage of the full contact. With the result that the metal surfaces bind. A good coverage of a degreaser then re apply lubricant, a carbon based grease which is less tacky so shouldn’t allow dirt to collect, and a superior lubricant. A few tests and the reel is behaving and it cannot be provoked into jamming. This is a seemingly common issue with the hardy offset drag and one which can be simply remedied with periodic degreasing and lubricating
