Can't speak for the rest of the system, but certainly up at Burn Estate we're starting to pick away now. The cold spring no doubt slowed the start, then last week we had a couple - one for each day the beat was fished. I nipped up after work on Monday and lost a sparkler at the bank - the guys fishing Edzell had one in around the same spot in the morning. We had a couple of rods on again today, and they were rewarded with a 6.5 pound licer on the fly, plus saw a good few fish which is a good sign as there are very few kelts about. Looking forward to getting a couple of hours in tomorrow morning!

Been invited to fish Balmakewan on the North Esk week after next and would appreciate any tips on pools, flees and anything else that would help me on this beat. Not having fished any of the Esks would appreciate any feed back . KF

KF I've never fished Balmakewan but I would say orange based flies work(Flamethrowers,p.shrimps) on the North Esk and if you have them in sizes 13,11,9,7 you'll be covered. Lines a slow intermediate s/head and a floater with a variety of tips will be more than enough. Rods 12/13fter in normal heights with a 14 or a 15fter in high water.

Cheers MK. So its a big enough (wide) that a 15ft will be "useable" Better take it up as well then. Kenny

On the beats that I fish with a couple of feet on the gauge a 14/15fter is handy

As MK says "with a couple of feet" on the guage. Dont forget the single hander.
