Cracking bit of water, enough diversity to cover all water height situations. On that note T.A. what height was it that day?

It is a lovely bit of water, but I've always thought that along with the other two Knockando estate beats it fails to punch its weight. They are situated bang in the middle of prime middle Spey but Phones has a 5 year average of 96 for three rods, Lower Pitchroy upstream is even poorer at 75 average for three rods, and the Knockando beat downstream has an average of 121, although that may be a four rod beat (it's a while since I fished there). Compared with the Carron/Laggan beats downstream that each produce about 250 for 5 rods this is poor. I've always thought that the relatively poor catches on the Knockando estate are not reflected in the prices that the estate charge, which is principally why it's been a while since I fished there.

I would have thought that prime Spey beats would be returning a better average than that Are the majority of these fish caught in May/June?

May and June is certainly the time to fish there. Nowadays July can be productive as well, with fish running later. Later that that, you will catch fish, but will be extremely lucky to see a sea louse. In the early spring, i.e. February to April, some will be caught, the later you go the better. I have to say April has always been my favourite month to fish the Spey, not the most productive but different every day as the weather changes from Winter to Spring and the fish that are caught are the finest looking fish I've seen anywhere.
