River Tweed – Bemersyde
w/e 30th March 2014
Well boys and girls the first report of the year! There has not been much to say before now. February started as November finished with water everywhere. Flood after flood after flood. I think we only fished 4 days in the month and even they were not good days, coloured and sometimes rising water. It’s the first time in 28 seasons we have never had even a Kelt in February. Did not see many jumping!
There have been some small changes to the beat this year with more water coming down the Ravenswood side of island and some of island on that side has been washed away, yet to find out where it has landed up.
There is a bigger hole in front of hut so we will have to watch the wading it’s also steeper near the bank and it looks like the gravel has just moved further down the pool. Some more banking has disappeared on the far side of Woodside just above the boat but the river has not been low enough to have a proper look.
On a brighter note March was a little better with 2 Spring fish of the beat, Chris Bryce with a 9lbs fish out the far side of the Boat Pool on the fly. Another fish out Woodside for Ian Ross first point, good fish18lbs. Good to see Ian out fishing the Wednesday Boys and Girls again this year, I took some scales from the fish to the Tweed Foundation.
This week has been pretty quiet with a fish lost down Woodside by Sandy Scott. Lesson to be learned don't get your fly box out when your fly is still in the water you end up losing some flys and your fish lol.
There’s lots of fish around Kelso, lets hope some start moving up to us soon. Total catch this year is 2 Spring fish,1 Baggot and a Sea Trout Kelt things can only get better mind we said that last year as well!!
Water looking good for next week, it will be about a foot Monday morning. Let’s hope the weather warms up some for the rest of week ?
Back to weekly reports from now until the end of November.

w/e 13th April 2014
Not a good start to the week with 2 days lost with coloured water, 3 foot on the gauge with the Leader putting lots of colour in.
Wednesday better still and over the tank. The boys fished the fly nearly all day with no success but tried the spinner in afternoon and a fish out Woodside, Third Point, David Proudfoot the lucky man on a flying c, 7lbs, fish quickly released back into the river to swim another day.
Thursday sees a small rise through the night but no more colour. Nothing showing today but a fish landed once more out of Woodside 7lbs nice and fresh, Chris Bryce his second of the beat this year. He is getting good at this Salmon fishing just a pity he can’t catch trout lol.
Nothing else for the rest of week, blew a gale on Friday but better on the Saturday with the water dropping all week, it’s was down to a foot on the Saturday.
It’s been a strange season so far, never seen it’s like in 28 years, 4 fresh fish, 1 Baggot and 1 Sea Trout Kelt but no Salmon Kelts this year which is unbelievable. I have only seen 1 fish jump this year!!
Well done to those catching fish and a special mention to Neil Sayers who was presented with the beat trophy for the largest fish caught at Bemersyde in 2013.

Bemersyde w/e 11th May 2014
Well hello boys and girls it’s been a while since the last report.
Things have been pretty quiet on the beat this last few weeks but some fish are starting to show up now. About time mind its May and the month is passing too quickly. Things are changing now the bluebells and garlic are in full flower, most of the trees are out and looking good, the Copper Beech in the Dish is looking magnificent once more. Ducklings are getting more numerous and the Otter is making an appearance on most days so Spring is ending and Summer is taking over. We just need the weather to pick up and get warmer.
Not the best start to last week with 2 fish being lost which is never good when they are this few and far between, water was looking good but then some rain on the Wednesday night, so a rising water Thursday morning with some colour but even so a fish in the morning out the Boat Pool, Dan McLeod being the lucky man 8lbs and fresh on a Yellow Bellie, good work in these conditions. The Friday sees a better water with Sandy Scott landing a nice 7 lbs fish from the Woodside 1st point but very few fish showing today and much the same on the Saturday. Some rain forecast over the weekend so we might get a rise of water and hopfuly some more fish to catch.

w/e 25th May 2014
The last 2 weeks have seen a few more fish turning up on the beat. The water was getting low last week but we managed a fish out the Boat Pool on the Tuesday morning and a 6 lbs Brown Trout out Woodside, Bob Anderson getting both fish. Wednesday saw no rods fishing, Thursday sees a fish lost in the morning and a few on the move. Friday only 2 rods fishing today Sandy Scott managed to lose a fish down Woodside but redeemed himself next cast with a small grilse of 3lbs. It is early to see them in May up this end of river. Saturday sees some more fish running through the beat and another lost on the fly, not good when they are so few and far between but some success late afternoon Matty Bird managed a 10 lbs fish out Woodside so ended with 3 fish caught and 3 long distance catch and releases for the week. Some rain forecast for Sunday so might get a rise in the water early next week.

w/e 1st June 2014
Monday
A very brown river today mostly from the Leader so no fishing today.
Tuesday
A good looking water, 5 inch with a tinge of colour. 3 rods fish the fly all day, some fish on the fin today most seen in the Boatpool as they came up the fast water from Woodside but not a touch all day.
Wednesday
Full house with 4 rods all fishing the fly only 1 tried the spin rod. Success today 1 fish out the Cromweil and another lost. Malloch Trophy winner Jim Reid managed to lose 2 fish in front of the ghillie in the Copper Beach!! Getting a habit I hear lol. Charles Jeffrey managed 2 fish out the Stream in the afternoon, one 5lbs and a beautiful 10lbs fish which had just lost its lice at the tail end of Stream. Both fish returned to river.
Thursday
Small rise of water today with a heavy color mostly out the Leader so a spinning water today. The boys fish all day and where rewarded with a 5lbs fish out top end of Boatpool. Dan McLeod the skilful rod with his home painted purple Flying C, only half the beat fished today other half being fly only.
Friday
Water temp 53 today and 7 inches on the gauge. Still holding some colour today but back on the fly and float lines and small tips. 1 fish lost 1st point Woodside. Listen here people make sure your drag is set up before you start so you don’t spool the line when the fish is on!! Better in afternoon with a fish out the Dish 11 lbs on a small Willie Gunn George Elliott with a nice fish.
Saturday
The water disappears overnight 3inches now. Full house today and fly fishing only, we get a good pull out the Copper Beech during the morning but better in the afternoon, Nick Morrall with a 12lbs fish out Woodside on a 12 Black & Yellow double and a fish lost out Dish on a Monkey.
Overall a lot better week with 6 fish landed but 7 fish never stayed on the line, as water drops fishing will become harder with more stripping needed to get some movement in the pools but least we are seeing and catching some fish now.

Bemersyde Update
Boys and Girls
Well we are nearly end of July, Spring is long gone and so are the Spring Fish.
An overview of the Spring was a poor first 2 months producing no fish not even a Salmon Kelt! Never seen this before, a couple of Baggots and a Sea Trout Kelt so not much cheer for the ghillie at start of season.
March sees 3 fish caught, biggest 18 lbs for Ian Ross out Woodside so at this point I was thinking things might just pick up especially when seeing fish being caught at the Junction but was soon disappointed realising that's where they where going to stay for most of the Spring.
1 fish in April and on the dark side to Chris Bryce 9lbs also Woodside.
Marked improvement in May with 16 Salmon and a Sea Trout landed, Salmon between 5 and 12 lbs biggest falling to Nick Morrall on a size 12 black and yellow. All the pools producing fish with Woodside doing the best, there must of been a few about even Charlie Jeffrey managed to catch 2 in a day lol.
June sees no fish in book untill the 12th day when Sheena West catches a 6 lbs fish her first from Bemersyde on her first day happy lady. The rest of month sees a sprinkling of fish with another 9 Salmon and just the 1 Sea Trout. Pretty low water for the month and getting lower.
Here we are in July it's sunbathing weather now with 1 Salmon and 1 Sea Trout for the month so far it's very hot so not much chance of a fish and even if we get water looking at reports from below there’s nothing to come anyway. No Grilse this year and even less Sea Trout, can't expect the Trout to keep coming back if everyone on the river wants to kill them, it’s about time we went to catch and release otherwise they will dissappear soon…..our famous big Sea Trout!! anyways all our salmon caught up to the end of catch and release where returned safely to the river to continue there journey to the spawning beds let's hope things improve for the back end, if not we will be in for a long long season.
