On such a horrible winters night - I hope this thread can be enjoyed by all - it gives some very amusing and interesting anecdotes about the late Hugh Falkus from a few people including ken at Fishdee. I hope whoever reads this gets as much pleasure as I did from it. www.flyforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=29688

I have read this book several times down the years
I have never ever specialised in Sea Trout fishing but must give it a go sometime.
As you say, quite a book and, as others say, quite a man.

He certainly was a character - my twin ken is the person called greenbanks in the thread - my brother is over fishing the rio Grande for big sea trout - as we speak - Lucky b.....
The stolen years is a good book - he was a sad loss for personal reasons, I new hugh for 20 yrs and fished his beloved esk for 20 yrs - had some fantastic times - That scene in salmo the leaper where he throws himself into the pool called black dub is hilarious but the advice has saved lives.

Hazeldub thats a great link you put up,i enjoyed it very much. Im a great admirer of the late Hugh Falkus and his books "Salmon Fishing" and "Sea Trout Fishing" had a huge infulence on my own angling education. This is a picture of a wood engraving by the late artist Christopher Wormell taken from the not so well known Hugh Falkus book "The Sea Trout".This book was published in 1987 to mark Hugh Falkus's 70th year and the 25th anniversary of his book "Sea Trout Fishing"which was first published in 1962.The book "The Sea Trout" was limited to 1000 copies and signed by the author. You are right about the book"The Seatrout" Skippy only 1000 printed and all signed by the man himself. I am lucky enough to have one in mint condition, took me a while to find one though. Stolen Years is a great read aswell with a beer in your hand or a dram.

Sewinfly iv never read the Stolen Years but ill come across a copy eventually Thought id keep the HF thread going with a picture of some of his Sea Trout patterns.I gave 2 of the sunk lures a wet just to show the silhouette and though the worm-fly is not a Falkus creation he did rate it as the best of the standard patterns. I have fished the sunk lure Skippy on the Ogmore river where I fish. Falkus was right in the way that sewin take the fly, with one hook in the scissors and the other in front. The fish are truly hooked as if they take it side on.

Iv fished the sunk lure many times sewinfly and in clear water its deadly.Iv fished it off an full floater,an intermediat, and a slow sink all to great effect. The only draw back with the sunk lure in my veiw is it can be difficult to cast at times with the single hander.I tie mine 2 an 1/2 inch to 3inch.As far as the lure's hooking capability's go's well its unbeatable.9 times out of 10 the fish will be hooked in the mouth with the bottom hook turn and run only to be hooked on the outside of the jaw with the top hook, exactly like HF descibes in his sea trout book what a Man !!! Skippy its a cracking book and a worthy addition to any library. I once asked Hugh who the finest angler he had met was and he proclaimed "Oh Ken that's an easy one-Its Pikey Fred-he's a genius"
