Had my 1st experience of these hooks the other day and wasnt very impressed, very soft and brittle. We had hook points bending and breaking off with grilse and sea trout defo wouldn't like to hook a decent fish on these. Wouldnt believe id ever hear myself saying this(with my hatred for salars!) but salars are defo better hooks IMO I bought a couple of packets a while back I wasn't that impressed with them with lumpy brazing and a bit narrow gape imo.

I didn't like them either very shoddy with bends and points out of line with each other. Not for me I'm afraid

I also got some hooks from Mick I did find 1 or 2 were a bit substandard and flung them in the bin which i have also done many times with salars and various other makes of hooks. I'm sure Mick will sort any problems with the hooks, they have after all just started making them. I have tied a few flees on the Mashama hooks and they do look much better than Salars, also i have had fewer losses of fish than with salars The tube doubles i have used with collies and sunrays are feckin fantastic

They are too light in the wire my dyna king murdered them, i would not trust them for heavy fishing maybe alright for grilse, a shame because there is market for a similar double hook to sawada in gold and silver, the only low water doubles i have used with confidence are the partrdge wilson, i prefer strength and weight is no bad thing.

All points taken on board! I gave the same wire specification to Mashama as for the Salars....I think a stronger wire would be better....we are working on a double and low water double similar to Guideline and Ken Sawadas......watch this space!! Mashama have been very helpful in coming up with new designs and some really excellent steel of late ...and they know that I will only accept bomb proof hooks so I will have some super new products to report shortly!!! Mick

Hi Mick, I am not being critical of you you have done a great job just to produce any hooks to market, I would however have say the ones ive seen do not have the same wire as the salars or indeed strength, I personally dont like tying on salars as they only suit certain styles of salmon flies for example irish shrimps are not well suited to them , but they are a very strong hook, a more useful hook would have the same proportions as the sawada sd3 with the needle point, but available in gold aswell as black nickel. Strength is everything for me in a salmon hook just my thoughts but the above is what i loook for as a commercial fly dresser in a double hook. Best wishes Corrib

Mick Very good Mick I find if a hook is not balanced, symetrically, it will not swim straight. On the doubles if one point is lower than the other the hook will swim lopsided or at best the fly will look odd.

Aye...I concur Its one of the reasons I have not been a fan of up eyed hooks in the past ...unless to tie a turle knot they dont sit to sit right...and I gave up tying turle knots yonks ago as they lost me too many fish.... Mick

I have been using the gold doubles on my tubes, what has surprised me is how easy they have been rusting in between the two bends where they are welded/brazed together.
We all put tubes away with the hook still attached and there maybe water in the silicon tubing still trapped and obviously this will lead to corrosion, but it seems the plating process is not covering the hook completely, hence the rust on the bare metal that has not been plated. Which in due course will weaken the hook.
I still like them and will use them.
Kamasan doubles I have don't seem to suffer with this problem.
