Gents.....impartial advice required, please.
I am planning to go to Russia and acknowledge that I'll have to get a good reel - one whose drag system will not explode, seize up or just plain melt - but which one?
My rods and lines are OK (mostly 10 weights) - Guideline sinking shooting heads, a Skagit and Rio multi tip line used on a Scott MacKenzie 16ft - unless someone will tell me differently!
Depends where and when you are going, sizes of fish and in river conditions vary wildly from river to river.
Varzuga/Kharklova in June is a different world from the Ponoi in July /August.
For the extreme brutish conditions where big fish are encountered fairly regularly in sometimes torrential watercourses you would do well with a Hardy Zane No. 3 which will take your 10s plus 300m+ backing and running line.
Co-incidently there is one for sale by Grilse Boy on S.F.F. for £300 just now, maybe worth a look?
For the Ponoi or Umba just stick to a good quality 9-11 reel it should handle anything you encounter there.
