what rod would you choose if you were fishing a Highland river e.g. the Thurso where you cant wade and were having to rely on over head casts and a double taper line? Would lets say cause Ive got 1 an AWM do the job? I ask as these rods are billed as shooting head rods. Im seriously considering getting an outfit for my trips up north.

It's the person holding the rod that casts the line, not the rod. Why opt for a double taper, a short triangle taper will give you softer presentation- the Afs is a mini TT and turns turning tips. Buy a 7/8 Afs to go on your 12' and practice

Unless your 6' inside the tip an afs will cast fine, if not go up a size A 7/8 is 37', stick a 5' polly on and it should do well

Remember that some of these rivers Im talking about especially the Thurso is narrow at parts, perhaps on par with the Teith at callander!!

Better still, take the single hander and wait for the fireworks During mid summer on the Thurso that would be definate ploy for me, especially when using small flies.
