what is the maxium shooting head weight in grams that a 10/11 powerful progressive 15 foot rod can handle? i hear alot of advice between 40-42 grammes how heavy can you go without your rod being effected? thinking about making a really long head from a sawada line?
All the best Aaron

It will depend on the length of head your planning on making, if your sawada line is a 10/11 your not going to end up with a head any shorter than it does now. A few people cut the running line off spey lines and then splice mono type shooting line to it to achieve more distance.

It can be as heavy as you want it, or as light.
It's not really the mass of the head that will burst the rod, it's the angler not changing their stroke length and speed.
10/11s off the shelf vary: Guideline 40g over 11 or 13m Rio 42g over 12.2m (#11) Loomis 47g over 12m (#11)
Cutting a Spey line won't really make a shooting head, it just makes a speyline with less drag to turn it over as you'll be on thinner running line.
Take a 75' or 95' comp heads, they use varivas on the back, but the heads designed to turn over without needing the same running line drag as a normal WF speyline is.
Find your rear taper end, cut a few feet into it and loop it, start from there and see what happens.
A Mach 55 with mono on the back instead of running line was great fun to cast,

A Mach 55 with mono on the back instead of running line was great fun to cast, I ask because sawada do some heads for customizing, they are like a speciality double taper, i use a normal 75 foot carron for my normal fishing, this is for distance spey casting with a sinking head, i just cant get away with the guideline heads imo they just dont have a good taper for spey casting, the rio are better and the vision are better again they are more refined imo, because i am long line caster I ve been trying to find the longest sinking shooting head, the sawada one looks good have a look at this link www.kensawada.com/w/show_desc.php?itemId=10785&l=e&imId=138. it gives an example of 15m and 13 ms for the two heads but is there any reason why i couldn just make a muck longer head or 17ms from ones side of the line? saying that 15 m might be long enough. regards Aaron
