I do days out grayling fishing on a Chalkstream carrier system of around 3 miles near Hungerford.
The day starts at a round 9am through till dusk,at arivall Kelly Kettle tea is available as it is alll day should you need and can fire the beast up.
Usually a mix of folks ,some been before, some been lots of times and some new to the beat/grayling/river fishing.
The old lags get sent of and for the next few hours I will take the new folks around ,and try to get them into fish ,pass on some skills and knowlege i have aquired on this beat, which I heav fished since the late 70s off and on and fairly regulary the last 8 years.
Around midday I return to the car park hut and fire up the bbq for the lunch time marinated sirloin steak in the best bit of bread I can find locally, these steaks are UK beef from a catering butcher i have been buying from for 5 or so years, and they are damm good.
Lunch is taken at 1pm ,often washed down with a drop of red or your favorite tipple. This is atime to gossip with old and new friends, slag of other forum members not present .Arrange fishings, network ,tackle tart.ect ect,in some cases conversations go through until home time.
After lunch ,you then have some other parts of the beat to fish .
Being fishing I can not quarantee fish but its very rare for the more skilled will not extract dozens of grayling up too around 2-2.5 lbs(no monsters )with the odd wild brown and stocked rainbow coming out of nowhere.
With this being chalk stream the fish can often be sighted and seen coming to your nymph/dryfly,exciting and informative .
My outfit for the system is an 8ft #4 rod ovelined with a dt 5 for the close up fishing, any rod 3-5wt with floating line fine tippet and say 9ft tapers leader will see you fine,if not equipped there are a couple of loaner outfits to borrow.
Flies tend to be on the small size 16 s being the standard for me ,although this season #20 nymphs have been the best in some very low clear water.Klinks from size 14 down do the biss around midday, unless we have an all day frost.
The cost of these days is for this year into january -£36 which includes the lunch and tea, wine and beer down to you!
Next year the owner of the beat will increase the charge to me so probably a fiver on top as of next october.
Payment in cash please.BTW I make no money out of this just do it for the fun of meeting newand old friends and sharing rather a nice place!
remaining dates this season are 27th december,10th and 24th january.
The grayling begins again next october ,for these dates and other events such as mayfly days its best to get on my email list ,just pm me a contact email addy and you are there with the days before the hoi poloi!
