Newtyle is a beat i have fished a lot this season, from Snow in January with 4 ft on the gauge, to sun and -1ft in March and through the summer. As yet it has only yielded a solitary sea Trout and kelts, but none the less its been an interesting season learning the pools and the nuances of fishing them in mostly low to very low water, not to mention some enjoyable days with good company on the water.
A lingering January Morning
A brisk -6 and sunshine looking up from Fiddlers in March
I had a rod for the closing closing day, so on Friday, very tired and after far too early a start, i arrived early at the beat for what promised to be a promising day. It had been fishing well all week and the beat total for the year was up at 170 fish, eclipsing the previous years total.
The usual verbal banter was exchanged along with a few glances in the ghillies box and what others were fishing, and the day had begun with the 14 other anglers.
I had the neck of the Cotter along with David, which we tried every tactic and fly in, but the moving fish were not for taking.
Paul, went in bellow us at the Tail and after 2 hours was bent into a fish in the Boil that had one thought on its mind, heading for Perth in heavy water. After a few trips 60 yards into the backing he landed what turned out to be an 18lb fish that had been in for a week. This was then supplemented with a call from Martin who had landed a 7lb licer also.
A few runs through the tail and Boil produced nothing and it was time for lunch.
The Bbq was going and Alan appeared with bags of burgers and Sirloin Steaks, which went down very well. Its the first time ive eaten a 12oz sirloin rare, in a bap The chef made sure there was no such dubiety with the burgers....Just ask Hoopy. Even Toby the Pup was surprisingly quiet after lunch.
The afternoon saw the "Tay Breeze" picking up, a fresh gale elsewhere, i spent the afternoon fishing the Cotter Tail, Boil and Steps. There were plenty of fish moving through but none were stopping.
Philip and Malcolm fished down through and we watched the Tay master class through the boil, thumping out full lines and fishing them, dispelling the "you need a sinking line" on the Tay with both fishing floaters with polys.
Combat fishing in the Cotter
The afternoon produced more banter but no more fish so it was back over to the hut and off to get changed for the night ahead, but not before a mugshot.
A thoroughly enjoyable night was had by all- the less said about that the better, and there were a few sore heads the next morning taking the boats out of the water.
A thoroughly enjoyable season on Newtyle over which the beat got 172 salmon, so congratulations to Martin and David on almost 50% up on last season. Roll on the 15th January.
Cheers guys!
