I promised to get the ball rolling with this.
Fly swaps are a great way for all our members who tie flies to share there patterns and to gain some new ones.
Being the first Trout Fly Swap on the forum, I will set the Deadline for the middle of each Month as opposed to the end.
I will accept names for those who wish to participate from today.
Rules. Maximum of 10 members. each tying 10 identical patterns
Patterns to be posted to myself by 15 January 2010.
Along with a stamped addressed envelope for return postage.
A picture of the fly along with the dressing is to be posted on the thread.
On completion of tying, entrant to pm me for my postal address
I will then compile a set containing 1 of each and post to each tyer
Each Mid-month Trout Fly Swap will have a different theme in order to keep things fresh and "see what emerges" so as to speak.
The theme for this first swap will be TRADITIONAL LOCH FLIES - all the old favourite names that many of us grew up with. Modern twists and new methods/materials/techniques of tying a pattern most acceptable though
Please apply via this thread. (Including the name of your intended pattern)
If there is a large over-subscription, I may even split it into two sections as is the practice on other Fly Swaps I have seen
Go for it chaps!

nessc
One of my favourites also, especially on the Bob in Size 14
I will start listing who is doing what now.
Could be quite a good list of classics coming through here but we may yet be surprised with some late runners

Guys
What's holding you back? The Forum cannot surely be Salmon only guys.
There are still 6 spaces available and it's Traditional Loch Flies.
Can you please have a think about entering? It would be nice to get 10 people signed up for the initial Trout Fly Swap.
You know it's not that difficult to do Trout Flies compared to the time one takes for Salmon flies
How about some Dabblers, Dunkelds, Watson's Fancy, Connemara Blacks or Mallard and Clarets? Lots of good ones to choose
Closing Date is mid January so hope to see a few more names here soon.

I've never tied loch style flies or flies for someone else before but I'll have a look at what I have in my box and see what I could tie. I think I have the stuff to tie a few Mallard & Claret or Willie Ross patterns on 14's or 12's.

Dry Fly
I am going to take your post as a Yes!
By the way, are you not getting Wilie Ross mixed up with Peter Gunn? Or am I thinking of the ex-Secretary of State for Scotland?
Seriously, the Peter Ross is one fly I have never been happy with tying. It never seems to sit just so for me.
The Mallard and Claret is a great fly also so let us know what you decide please

Guys,
There are just 5 spaces left in our first ever trout fly swap.
The theme is Traditional Loch Flies
Details of how to enter and closing date at start of this post.
We have some cracking patterns so far.
Don't miss out on this. Could re-awaken your desire for the older but traditional way of fishing on a loch.
Anyone fancy doing one of the following:
Dunkeld, Woodcock and Mixed, Ke-He, Connemara Black, Bibio, Teal and Green, Blae and Black, Black Pennel, Whickham's Fancy, Invicta?
Pleny easy ones to choose from so looking for 5 of you to get entered.
Closing date is 15 January for receipt of flies so still plenty time.

The Mallard and Claret is a great fly also so let us know what you decide please tweedbunnet This is what happens when a simple Clyde fly fisher tries to get involved in fancy stuff. I did mean Peter Ross. However, I have tried to ties some today but my very old vice is no longer gripping hooks. It has 4 jaws like in a drill and the top pair in particular won't grip hooks as they are so worn, the hooks keep slipping. Mrs Clause was going to get me a new vice but could not manage because of the snow. I'll have to withdraw from this months swap as I don't want to risk substandard tying. I tried using the horizontal jaws, but things were getting silly - extreme cackhandedness.

It is a Fly Swap, not a Fly Tying Competition!
This is how we all learn from each other
Sorry you feel you must withdraw due to lack of kit etc.
I never had a "real" fly tying vice until I was in my mid-20's and used an small Engineer's Vice until then.
It is the taking part that counts in Fly Swaps. If someone's flies look less than a perfect Textbook tying, it does not mean they will not catch fish for someone else in the Swap! In fact, it is, IMHO, impossible for everyone to tie to a "so-called" perefect standard as everyone has their own style. One person's style may look very untidy etc but fish are the ultimate judge of a fly, are they not?
If you have second thoughts, you are still very welcome to take part.
