Hi I am relatively new to fishing having started fly fishing for trout over last 18 months and wishing I did it years ago. My preference already is wild river/loch fishing and I intend to pursue salmon this year for 1st time. My novice question is around what is the best hook size to go for that gives me the best chance of a catch but also to give the fish a chance when returned as that is my intention assuming I catch any of course. My early thoughts are to go with a single rather than doubles or trebles. I look forward to any helpful thoughts and comments. I joined the Dreghorn club last year so will be fishing the Irvine to begin learning my craft.

Desmondo,
Welcome to the Forum.
Don't know much at all about the River Irvine but I would have thought that Singles in sizes 4-10 would be about right for starters.
Definitely think you need to talk to the local experts who regularly fish the Irvine
