Hugh Falkus in his book "Salmon Fishing" donates a full chapter to this little fly "Yellow Dolly" and though not a sea trout fly or a Falkus pattern he certainly held it in the highest regard so i thought it well worth a mention in the H. F. thread. The author of "Salmon on a Dryfly" and creator of the Yellow Dolly Derek Knowles exchanged several letters with Hugh Falkus extracts of which can be read in H. F.s "Salmon Fishing". Fished Dry by all accounts the Yellow Dolly was a very successful pattern in low water summer conditions. Skippy Attachments:

The late Great Hugh Falkus was well known for his tactical approach to Sea Trout fishing, I.E. " First- Half" "Half- Time" and "Second-Half" but the tactic that proved his Sea Trout fishing genius to me was his use of which he aptly named "Extra-Time". To those not familiar with the Falkus method of Sea Trout fishing this required one to Re-Tackle about 15 mins before first light down to "Wee-Doubles" with suitable line and leader.Just at first light a tiny window opens which never ceased to amaze me.This only lasts around 20-40 mins tops but the action was always fast and furious. The picture below is of the original fly's i tied for various hights of water in sizes 12,14,16, to fish this Magical Falkus "Extra-Time". His comments about bigger fish in the 2nd half was spot on though there were exceptions, I had taken big sea trout on the esk during the second half on a size 8 dark mackerel and also taken big seat trout fishing sunk lure of a neutral density line in Donalds pool which is an absolute cracker of a pool on the esk - My advice believe in what you are fishing with - Don't be afraid to throw the rule book out the window because Falk really was trying to get people to think about what they were doing rather than stick religiously to specific methods in my opinion. I was watching some videos last week of us fishing with Falk, Bill Arnold and Tony Debruslais with my brother on the Derwent and also watching many of my old video films from the esk shot 15-20 yrs ago - magic. I realy should get these converted to disc and upload them for people to see - Some of the falkus video film I shot just before his death is really good and at times really funny.

It if you ever put these onto DVD then please let us know. It must of been a great time to fish with Hugh and experience fishing with the the man himself.
Seatrout fishing is a great book and is still in my view a great book to read and still applicable to this day.
I tried once to find the the woodcarvings for the pictures of "THE SEA TROUT" on the internet but a long shot I know.
I am glad I have one of the thousand books printed and signed by HF.
All the best

I have flim of my brother taking a 15lb salmon on the derwent after falk covered it apparently for hours to no avail - To rub salt into the wound falk netted the fish and then gave it dogs abuse - A priceless piece of film. For all his shortcomings honestly for us way back when he gave a tremendous amount of his time and advice on the esk and nothing pleased him more than to see you having success. The esk was a challenging beck in low water and yet with his advice my bro and I certainly took good fish out of it which we ma not have done if he had not given advice. Tony Debruslais who owns the fishing on donalds pool now was an absolute master at taking fish out of the esk

I've got Salmon fishing and Sea Trout fishing, but haven't read more than a couple of pages.
I hate the writing style, it's monotonous.
Others like Gawesworth or Keachie are enjoyable to read.
