My friend pulled this fish out of the River Don dead. It was a bar of silver and it weighed in at 24lbs but it's head was covered in this brown fungal like growth. It only covered the head the patch below. Anyone know what this is or have seen it before on fish? Any help would be grateful. Cheers Craig [/img]

If you get answers from the biologists, could you let us know what they reckon it is.
would be interested to find out the cause.
Dave.

Could it be caused by Saprolegnia? Often it is a secondary infection after skin damage and is grey/white but can appear brown after the fish has been lying in water with sediment.
I'm assuming the wirey stuff around it in the picture is weed and not net?

Looks like it's all weed gathered while the fish is lying dead on the fungus underneath

Craig
Get the photo over to any Mycology department who specialise in fish pathogens, preferably Don-side.
Prof Neil Gow always had an aquatic fungal spore research interest in Aberdeen University, I know a post doc of his does at least.
You could also try Dr Jim Deacon in Edinburgh University, my PhD supervisor of past.
And also the Dee biologists.
They should all be able to point you in the right direction, unfortunately I've been out of the game for a long time and so will not offer any more on this.
I don't see any harm being done by you taking that fish out of the river as that would help to reduce any infectious innoculum from the vicinity, especially if the water is low, warm and there are other fish around.
I'd be really interested in your findings on this one as I heard there has been bit of fungus knocking around again in low warm water on the Don and Esks.

I saw a dead fish, with what looks just like this in the Ericht, brownish fungal/blistery looking mostly around the head, and seems to rot straight in the way
