peebles crown and town water....disgrace

As i stated in another thread i planned do get a couple of last minute days on the tweed at peebles crown water.

i managed to get a hold of two fish on friday, one which was a small coloured grilse manged to wriggle off after a couple of spirited jumps and the other was a manky kelt of around 8lbs. other than they two fish i barely seen another fish all day, but what i did manage to see was truly disgusting, i counted twenty anglers on this stretch and all but myself and one other were poaching hoors, sniggling away without a care in the world!!
there was 5 guys all stood at the mouth of the manor burn all howking away, they took everything the caught...trout, grayling, salmon and sea trout, ripe or not!!!! at another pool the locals were sat on deck chairs with their getoblasters and super strenth lager at least 8 guys fishing simultaneously. not a sign of a baliff anywhere!!!!!!

in all my days, i have never seen poaching to such a degree. now im aware that this go's on up here but i have been fishing the tweed all my life, and although i dont frequent this part of the tweed often, i have never witnessed it so bad!!

i will not be back until i see vested improvements!!!

letter to the tweed commission will be in the post tomorrow!!!!

I walked the crown water on saturday with my wife and could not believe what we saw. I was not sure i would say anything but reading this post made me feel i was right to be disgusted.
Where are the baillifs?.This is so wrong, something has to be done!!

Was it not borderer who, in 'another life', was quite adamant that these practices had been largely confined to the history books?

Could be that the 'Tweed Disease' & the Walkerburn Angel needs to be eradicated more effectively than with a few harsh words on the riverbank and irate/frustrated posts on the interweb.

Any local bods tried to capture events on something less temporary than just their own eyes??

unfortunately i personally had no means of capturing the events other than my peeps, although i wish i had a camcorder!!

like i said, i have wrote a letter to the tweed commission, with regards to this, and i wait with a sense of hope that it is met with some constructive planning to eradicate this problem...... but hope is a mighty long shot, surely im not the first to raise this with them!?

speyducer you are right i did say it was not as bad as once was but if you read my post on the other forum you will see i am also disgusted having a snide swipe at me won"t solve the problem as i have stated if this was the junction tillmouth boleside etc etc etc this would not be happening so WHY is it being allowed at peebles it is the same river run by the same people but they choose to turn a blind eye and lets just put the record straight right now 20 of these morons where visitors so take off our own forum members it makes 18 of the snigglers visitors so please don"t make out it is only a local problem it is much more than that regards jamie

No 'snide swipes' at anyone;

It's just that it appears fairly obvious that this sniggling/howking/stroke-hauling/foul-hooking practice with heavy sinking lines & large treble hooks (very lightly 'dressed' so as to represent a 'fly') cast upstream and then hauled across the backs of resting back-end salmon in their known lies has been going on (not just on the Tweed!) in your locality as long as anyone can remember. That the practice has been ingrained into the methodology of whosoever casts a line over that water still doesn't make it standard practice by default.

However, if it was MY local water, I would have made like a bird-watcher, and recorded each and every event & individual, names, faces, clothes, cars, etc; and then presented a dossier of the hard evidence to the RTC & the police.

Without that evidence being presented in hard-evidence format, you may expect that the perpetrators to continue unstopped & unpunished.

It seems to me that it already is way beyond harsh words; something needs to be DONE!

mike i totally agree with your last post but first we all work so making a dossier is not that simple on my days of hols etc i like ..just the same as you to fish for salmon i have on umpteen times reported things to peebles police remember their station was on tweed banks i have also wrote to rtc without reply on the few times we see bailiffs they check tickets and they are gone you know and i know we need tough policing of this beat get day tickets down to 10 per day the beat is 2 miles long how does that justify 20 day tickets plus season tickets please read my thread on the other forum some times i feel i am one voice pxxxx against the wind jamie

Jaimie, i beg to differ mate, at least half of those twenty were locals! but it is not just a local problem, i agree to that!

I totally agree about this problem its be on going for thirty that I
know of probably longer the way I see it is that the police and the other agencies involved in dealing with this problem are to close to some of perpetrators it needs some body from outside the peebles area to control it and needs to be up close and personal over a period of time to discourage these so called salmon fishers..

This problem has been going on down there for over 20 years that I know of. There is no point complaining about it online after they are awa' up the road wi their black fush. Walk away then immediately telephone the police and report serious poaching incidents. Ask for the man in uniform who is well versed in Wildlife crimes, they will take it seriously. To not do anything, is in my eyes, the same as condoning it.

this thread is a year old, we are not condeming it online it has been well discused and reported. myself and martin where having a wee bit of banter that is all. can i also point out to you that we don"t all go up the road with "quote" black fish, a good few regular rods fish well within the rules. today i landed 2 rather clean cock fish from the crown water one of 16lb and another of 12lb both came out by the mouth and both swam away again. please don"t assume we are all poachers on this beat just because it has a bad reputation
