Used to use braid years ago when it came out first, however I went off it because it frayed along the whole length that was being used.
Thought it was time to try it again.
Got myself a 300yd spool of 15kg power pro and wondered if it would be good practice to split it into 2 and put mono as backing on 2 spools first. That way I've got 2 spools with braid just in case.
Any tips on how to judge the amount of backing ?

Any tips on how to judge the amount of backing ? Been using this for the past few years. The problem with splitting it is that you soon haven't got enough on the spool and risk the mono coming into play and you don't want that 'cos it will cut through it under tension. Better to put the 300yds on. With the thin diameter it doesn't really matter if you lose a bit, it still goes out for miles.

I've got a standard shimano spool do you think I'll still need a little backing. Could I use fly line backing

Wind on the braid first till you have about half on the spool then fill to the top with backing, then the slow bit you take it all off and wind on the backing first and your spool is filled to capacity and you have the other half for the spare spool which you do the same thing on, I tend to use 25/30 lb it still casts for miles.

I converted to braid last year. How long does it last for before considering replacement?

Watch for it going hairy and keep an eye on your rod rings too! I cut off the last few feet each time I change the lure as this tends to wear more rapidly through casting.

The hairier it gets the less intact it's getting! I've never been broke on it, but pinged a few lures off casting when i've inadvertantly tied on with fluro! Mate of mine put me onto this a few years back. All he uses is the 15lb stuff and he's never been broken either, and he's a dirty wormin' b%*&^*d ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

put mono on first as the braid may slip on the spool if you are using without mono backing. BJA
