The Lochy is the largest west coast river according to themselves. How? It's nowhere near the longest, or the widest. What do they think qualifies it as the largest?

Second biggest by catchment size, the Clyde is the biggest, by a good margin, although the mean flow in the Lochy is a lot greater, probably the greatest in the west coast. Its not the most productive river in the west though, that honour belongs to a much smaller river

Thanks Brian,
It seemed a strange claim to make, perhaps with "carlsberg" after it then more apt.
Is it the Doon that holds that accolade?

In the Halcyon days the lochy would of thrashed all the west coast rivers before the salmon farms got going The lochy is is the most beautifully river i have fished, it is such a shame that the salmon fish farms have fecked the west coast fisheries Tony

It will come back again i'm sure some day

Its not the most productive river in the west though, that honour belongs to a much smaller river I'm not so sure it is. Okay loch Lomond is a huge catchment, but the River Leven drains into the firth of Clyde so is really of no consequence when discussed in terms of the Clyde as a Salmon fishery. The Lochy may not be what it used to be, but nowhere is, and like many other famous salmon fisheries has availability in what was once "dead mans shoes". Agree with comments above, it is a stunning river and one which has been kind to me by way of fish every time I have fished it. I'll be back 2011. I've also fished the Doon on several occasions and that too is a bonny productive river. Hope the water extraction application don't come to owt and feck that river too.

I'll be back to the Lochy as well in May with a few other forum members for 3 days. Wouldn't miss it for the world

I'm not so sure it is. Okay loch Lomond is a huge catchment, but the River Leven drains into the firth of Clyde so is really of no consequence when discussed in terms of the Clyde as a Salmon fishery. The Clyde itself will likely soon be counted as the most productive on the west, but the catchment size is 1903km2, six times the size of the Doon. The Leven catchment size is about 784km2 but then lochs don't produce as many smolts as rivers do! Cue Laxdale with response BnC

Indeed.............its not like a scientist to stray into the realms of conjecture. Unless, of course, it suits them to do so. I have to say I am tempted to go for some casting practice in the Lochy. It is due a good year.
