Ive been trying various threads recently, the best Ive found is utc 7/0 but the damn stuff will break on me back and forth! Well today I ran out of my fire orange and decided to use a spool of uni 6/0 now it didint break on me but the heeds on the Alistair's Ive tied up are huge!!! So I was wondering what thread you prefer? Normally using fine threads aint a prob, I use a 17/0 for under my posts of the parachute dries to tie the hackle of.

It isnt your bobbin holder thats causing the breaks? I use uni 8/0. utc 70 and GG sheer 14/0 which is very good but has a habit of unraveling on the spool

I use this stuff it's dtex 150(1) or Nm 65/1 or maybe it's Gutermann U151 can't remember ever breaking it. Got it from veniards years ago. Parton sells similar on Ebay DTEX 150

I think your hands are the problem especially with UTC as I've had the same problem with my hands being rough.

I usually only break it out when I attempt woven bugs for the ladies, and doesnt last that long especially when ive impaled myself on a few size 12 grub hooks.

I use utc 70 denier for most of my flies, and provided you are using a ceramic bobbin holder it should not break. On smaller flies I use Sheer 14/0 from flymakers and I can't speak highly enough of it. It is as strong if not stronger than the utc 70 and miles stronger than 8/0 uni thread. Stear clear of 6/0 uni it's too big for all but the largest flies same as utc140 denier. 140 denier makes a great floss though. 8/0 uni is not worth the bother. you look at it the wrong way and it will break. This seems to be a problem of recent years with uni thread, as I used to use it all the time and never had a problem with it breaking. I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole now. Danvilles also do a good quality thread that I think is measured at 70 denier also hope this helps a bit. Dave. (P.s I've got loads of fire orange utc )

It can help long term but obviously avoid getting it on your tying materials. Even use it an hour or so before you tie so it is propoerly adsorbed Even running the wife's nail file down the edges of your fingers and thumbs can help before tying. tb

I like UTC a lot - Both 70 and 140 I also think Steve Parton's Sparton threads are pretty good. The basic one he sells is more than adequate for Tubes and larger hooks down to about a Size 8. I used his Red Thread recently and it feels very good. Strong but you still get a neat head and you would have to really go some to break it. Prefer it now to Uni Thread 6/0 tweedbunnet
