Just noticed Faughanpurples post and he is right. The Finn is nowhere near as good as James is painting. The strict conservation rules have not been implemented for nothing. If you live on the river Im sure you will have your day as James appears to have had but it no longer warrants the annual visit never mind tri-annual that we used to do. Quite simply. costs have soared, ferry fares have soared and with everything else attached to the Irish economy just now and the basic fact that the river no longer supports the massive grilse runs it once did it is no longer the Paradice it once was, nowhere near unfortunately. Anyone going across nowadays faces the situation that FP cannot even get right from a vantage point of just across the Foyle-----you just cannot guarantee the fish any more. James, I have been taken in by(some) Irish guides before---please dont paint it any other way than honestly, then you will have no problems with clients when they appear. Good luck with your career choice, hope you do well.

the fish are definitly there. the loughs agency are useless and using the finn as a scape goat making it look bad to get nets off the lough. but the fish are there.

No one is saying there isnt fish in the river.
Just not the numbers that would bring me rushing there in the Summer or Spring as my first port of call.
It's a beautiful river and if there is water next Saturday I's fish it in a hearbeat and I'll probably fish it again in the Summer as well. Only on the occasion that my own club waters are in need of water or like next weekend, too early for any serious effort.
If you are refering to the Loughs Agency counter figures, I agree completely that they are incorrect and not one counter on the whole system works correctly. That's my opinon of course. The real proof that the numbers are not there is the anglers. We anglers are a fickle bunch and vote with our feet if the fishing isn't up to scratch. Whens the last time you saw 30 or 40 cars parked up in one spot fishing the river and maybe 2 or 3 spots the same the whole length of the river? That was a regular occurance 15 years ago.
James the river is still a pale shadow of its former self. The C&R implementations, the 2 fisheries at the top end and the River's own Habitat could be it's saviour though. Here's hoping.

Given the nature of my last few posts on this thread the irony wasn't lost on me that it was the only river in the Foyle system to get a run of fish worth going after and I spent the majority of the late Spring/Summer doing just that The timing of my visits due to work etc always seem to fall either side of the best of the fishing and I got washed off more than once due to the wet stuff and how quick this river comes up. That's fishing but I thoroughly enjoyed exploring this river and getting to know it again since I havent really spent too much time on it since i was about 15 until 3 or 4 years ago. Anyway a few pics From the Reelin in May, A day where we arrived to find the main river at 4ft+ (wouldnt be the last time either ) but a wee hunch sent us up to the Reelin. A bit early in the year for up there but you never know ;D July and the grilse arrived. Not in the big numbers of yesteryear but steady enough and plentiful enough where you fished with expectation again I'd a few others landed but no pics unfotrunately but hoping for a repeat or better in 2012. Going down the Corner pool in July 2010

KS
Any time there was water it was worth fishing this year from mid April right through to mid August. We didn't see too many fresh fish after that and stopped fishing it the last week in August because of that.
What next year brings who knows and I'll be waiting to late Spring before buying the season ticket again as £350 is a lot to shell out before the season starts and no guaratee of the runs holding up.
