Sounds good fishing, whens the best times to fish it? in recent years we have had a super spring round of fish. fish ranging from 9lb -16lb which is good for ireland. and then in the summer we have our typical grilse run. in the autum then we get the start of the autum run but when the salmon come in in great number our season is closed unfortunatly.

For many years my friend and I came across to fish the river sometimes 3 times a year. We fished at Cloghan with David Wilde and Killygordon with James McNulty. We had some fabulous fishing but sadly came to an end as the river started to go downhill sharply. We havent been back since David died mostly because the river has been poor and the cost of living in Ireland has spiralled outrageously. Also fished the Mourne below the Sna with Frank And Davie Elliot. Wonderful fishing at the time. Sounds like it may be coming back to its best although I hear the Lower Finn below Stranorlar hasnt been good this year.

i can nearly be sure that if you herd that the finn hasnt been fishing then you ave been chatting to people that has refused to fish it dur to catch and release being instated. but i can asure you if your willing to walk and fish i you will gt fish. i fish up at cloghan/glenmore all the time thats where i do guiding and have my season ticket. its a super river and much nicer than the mourne with alot more fly water. although this month last year seen 5000 fish go over the counter on the mourne at sion mills.

Hello forum remember me ;D It's been a while since i've been able to log in here The hand held wont let me for some reason and you've been barred from my work server My home computer is up the left too BUT For one night only i've a lend of alap top so thought id pop in and say hello. I also thought i'd add a bit of perspective to this thread. James you seem like a good lad and you've had good days on the river this year. Fair play. C&R asnt driven anglers away the sheer drop in numbers of fish has. 10 or 15 years ago literlly 10's of thousands of fish ran this river in June and July. Ive never seen the like of it before or since. As keirstream has said the fishing is a shadow of its former self on this once mighty spate river. The spring run this year and fishing was poor. Blighted by drought that lasted well into June early July and low numbers. It did fish ok when it had a bit of water in early April but nothing like the spring fisheries you have in Scotland. As for the grilse run. Its best decribed as patchy. 3 times i got the call to go to Cloghan "full of fish" ringing in my ears as we sped up the road. 3 times we didnt see a tail in great water. It is a beautiful river and one of my favourites to fish. I enjoyed my trips there but the main thing was lacking fish and expectation of that pull. If managed properly it will recover as the habit and enviroment on the Finn valley is second to none. It seem to have 2 owners at the top end now in Cloghanand Glenmore that want to do this. I guess if you invested heavily you would too. The nets are off the Foyle for the forseeable future and with C&R now on the river hopefully it will do just that and we will once again have a great river to fish. Fngers crossed.
