I was looking for somewhere to fish this Saturday during the week and knew I would only be able to fish till lunchtime so this little beat fitted the bill. Looking at the catches on fishesks there was fish going through the Kinnaird beats all week with quite a few caught mid week. The plan was to be fishing by 6am as this was when high tide would be and there would be dozens of salmon crashing through the beat As I arrived the other two rods were set up and heading off to the top of the beat. I headed down to the bottom pool Watties Bain where I was sure to see them coming in. Fished it twice through without so much as seeing a fish although did manage a couple of wee rainbows! not sure if there is a fish farm on the Southie. Watties Bain It was now 8.30 and still no sign of them! Had a quick throw between the croys(Long pool?) and third cast a strong pull which I thought was a sea trout but no. Feeling pretty pleased I wandered up to the top of the beat and gave the top pools a quick going over but no sign of fish and by now was very bright so headed home. Lovely fish. Well done. I thought you were only allowed single or double hooks on the Esk's ? Not according to the beat letting conditions but they may well be out of date.

Yes thats a memo sent to the beat proprietors which I certainly don't have. This is off the fishesks website FISHING REGULATIONS The conservation of Salmon (Esk Salmon Fishery District) Regulations 2005. From the opening of the season in 2005, the following regulations apply: * No person shall fish with a hook other than a single or double hook without barbs. * No person shall retain any salmon caught by rod and line. These regulations apply to the Esk salmon fishery district between the 16th February and 31st May, both dates inclusive, in each year. Nice report and pictures MK. Getting to like the Esks the more I see of them and reports like this.
Pretty wee river(s) with very interesting pools that I have seen so far, and I am looking forward to our trip up to the North Esk at Burn Estate later on in the month.
Well done on the fish - what a wee topper of a grilse.
