My eagerly awaited trip up North seemingly coincided with a low river, but you can't pick your days in this game I suppose.
On arrival at the lodge I was shown the the river that was just at the front of the lodge and it looked low. With a some what less than enthuiastic heart, I put on a brave face as the forecast was for rain during that week. Rain that didn't appear, bl**dy forecasters get their money easy.
How ever here is a few pictures of the trip.
The Lodge.
Looking down the home pool, which was a long slow pool with an under water croy/bedrock. At this croy salmon would often be seen showing there.
Looking down the Island Stream. This pool held a lot of salmon/grilse in it and I lost a fish in here, that just slipped the hook. I guess the herd of cows at the back of me had never heard swearing before, they did that day!

Lairds cast pool.
Luther Pool. This looked promising and indeed it was. It was moving with fish.
After fishing the neck I moved down the pool only to find that it had a troublesome backwash on our side and in order to reach the salmon that were well out and down from me, I resorted to throwing a long line across the main stream and allowed the loop to pull line down the middle of the flow. After the line straightened out over where I had seen a few showing I gave the line a few little pulls and it was on. Playing a salmon on a single handed trout rod was fun to say the least!!.
Not a big fish, but a very welcome one considering the conditions. It was returned and swam away strongly to continue its journey.
We had the pleasure of fresh fruit every day! Never seen that before and they were excellent. Tesco - £2.99 for a small punnet and I must have had a good few punnets for free.
Here is another fish showing in that home pool. every few minutes one or more would show, but try and get them to take a flee

All in all a very good break, meeting some old friends from way back. but the river and the fish could have played ball with us, but as I said before you have to take the good with the bad. The four days produced that one salmon two missed and one lost. Next time perhaps.
