Gentlemen, I have a days fishing on the North Esk and will no doubt will be having a wee go at the seatrout. My question as a non seatrout fisher is what flies to use for the North Esk and does it make any difference as to the colour of the actual hook?
Your advice would be appreciated.

Kenny. I don't think the colour of the hook, really matters, but as usual, black or silver are a safe bet. stick with the usuals for the seatrout. Silver stoat on the point every time, and then anything you fancy on the dropper, dark mackarel, teal blue and silver, partridge and orange, medacine, butcher, bloody butcher, kate mclaren (well worth a go on the dropper) peter ross is also a great dropper flee. A few small aluminium tubes are worth taking or needle tubes, dressed sparse in black, silver blue, and for any faster water try a few snake flies. Don't forget about the top of the water stuff either muddlers, big daddy's skating sedges. If they are being picky, then try the smallest of river trout patterns ie, spiders etc in sizes 14- 18. Any of the above flies should stand you in good stead for connecting with a few seatrout.. If you require any of the above, drop me a line . Dave.

Cheers Dave, nice feedback. Just ordered some as I need them this year Seriously I ordered a good few silver stoats, std stoats, dunkelds, bloody butchers, Peter Ross, collie dogs in different colours etc all size 12 and 14s in doubles, so hopefully I will have enough cover. Thanks for the reminder on the surface flies! I have some trout Muddlers (large) so should cover me to some degree with them. I will of course report back on what we didn't catch as usual P.S. If you were to fish with just one sea trout flee what would it be? kf

KF
I fished there for a season and met an old chap on the Association water
He fished with a Colonel Downman's Fancy Size 8 and 10 singles Red Ibis Tail Black floss body with Silver Rib Black Hackle Blae Wing with JC
He had found that a good fly over the 50 or so years he fished there. He also used a Cane rod!

Having said that, you have plenty of time to commission a few sized 12/14s

What beat are you on Kenny? I've two days on pert starting the 12th, so with a good soaking there should be some good sport.

Another one to add to the box then Tony South Esk is a lovely river, last trip i found it as nice as the Dee with clear water on a gravel bed, but a third of the width so when a 20lb'er heads and tails its a rod length away. You should have a cracking day on it. Reports of some nice seatrout coming off it around the 6lb mark. Get a few monkies and sunrays tied up just incase
